About the job
We are looking for an experienced and compassionate Registered Nurse to join our team as Ward Manager for a 3-month fixed term contract. You will provide day-to-day clinical leadership to a team of registered nurses and healthcare assistants, ensuring high standards of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of holistic care.
You will help the ward run safely and effectively, including planning staff cover, supporting clinical supervision and development, managing risk, overseeing safe medicines management and contributing to clinical audit and quality monitoring. You will work closely with the Head of Clinical Services and liaise with colleagues across Sue Ryder and with external health and social care professionals.
This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who can bring calm, visible and supportive management to a clinical team and who is motivated by delivering excellent care.
About you
You will be a Registered Nurse with post-registration experience in a clinical field and evidence of continuing professional development. You will have proven experience of leading and managing clinical teams and be able to build trust, influence practice and support people through change.
You will be self-directed, highly motivated and able to manage competing priorities. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential, including the confidence and sensitivity to communicate difficult messages to service users and their families. You will also bring strong interpersonal, negotiation, conflict-management, teaching and mentorship skills, alongside competent IT skills.
Minimum Essential criteria
• Ability to prioritise competing demands, manage risk and support safe, high-quality clinical care.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate sensitively with service users and families and manage difficult conversations.
• Knowledge of best clinical practice for the client group and current healthcare legislation.
• Proven experience of leading and managing clinical teams, with the ability to build and influence an effective team.
• NMC Registered Nurse with post-registration clinical experience and evidence of continuing professional development.
Desirable criteria
• Experience of managing a process of change and supporting people through change.
• Experience within a specialist care or hospice environment.
What you’ll be responsible for
• Providing clinical leadership and ensuring high standards of care in line with NICE guidance, Sue Ryder quality governance and the NMC Code.
• Leading, supporting and performance-managing clinical colleagues in line with Sue Ryder policies and procedures.
• Planning effective staff cover and maintaining a safe and effective duty rota.
• Ensuring appropriate clinical and professional supervision, development and competency assessment.
• Taking a lead on safe medicines management, including monitoring and documentation of controlled drugs.
• Managing and assessing risk and ensuring appropriate measures are in place to protect service users and colleagues.
• Contributing to clinical audit, quality standards and monthly clinical monitoring.
• Working collaboratively with service users, families, colleagues and external health and social care professionals.
• Supporting learning and acting as a positive role model for colleagues.
• Deputising for the Head of Clinical Services when required.
