About MAG:
MAG (Mines Advisory Group) is an international humanitarian organisation based in Manchester, UK, and working in 32 countries. We remove landmines and unexploded ordnance to release safe and productive land for communities, and work to reduce the threat of armed violence by supporting governments to safely manage weapons and ammunition. In 1997, MAG was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for our work campaigning for the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention.
Our vision is a safe future for women, men and children affected by violence, conflict, and insecurity. Our mission is to save lives and build safer futures by addressing the causes and consequences of armed violence, working with and for communities so people can live with dignity, choice and without fear.
Our values guide everything we do. We are determined, expert, act with integrity, lead with compassion and are inclusive in how we work.
About the Lebanon programme:
MAG launched its Weapons and Ammunition Management (WAM) and Physical Security and Stockpile Management (PSSM) activities in Lebanon in 2017, in close coordination with the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), the Ministry of Defense, PM/WRA, and the U.S. Embassy in Beirut. The program aims to enhance national security and stability by ensuring the safe storage, management, and disposal of weapons and ammunition, in line with international standards (IATG). Since its inception, MAG has constructed over 20 explosive storehouses (ESH)—creating more than 2,000 m² of safe storage space—and upgraded key sites. Beyond infrastructure, MAG has trained over 90 LAF personnel and conducted 66 site assessments to identify and mitigate high-risk areas. Looking ahead to 2025–2027, MAG plans to expand its work by building new ammunition depots in South Lebanon, strengthening national training facilities, and supporting the LAF in implementing sustainable, decentralized, and safe stockpile management systems, ultimately safeguarding lives and reinforcing Lebanon’s long-term security and resilience.
About the Jordan programme:
Building on MAG’s considerable experience of delivering PSSM interventions globally and elsewhere in the Middle East region, MAG has launched a new project to support the Jordanian Armed Forces’ (JAF) Sustainable Physical Security and Stockpile Management (PSSM), to enhance regional security by reducing at-risk, illicitly proliferated, or indiscriminately used conventional weapons. MAG will work in partnership with the JAF to strengthen their munitions management capacity, enabling implementation of the JAF’s Munitions Infrastructure Master Plan.
About the role:
MAG is seeking an experienced and highly skilled WAM Technical Lead to oversee the implementation and technical delivery of Weapons and Ammunition Management (WAM) activities across Lebanon and Jordan. This role is central to strengthening national capacity in ammunition safety and stockpile management and ensure that all technical activities are delivered safely, effectively, and in line with MAG’s operational standards and international technical guidance.
The WAM Technical Lead will coordinate and provide technical oversight for WAM projects and activities within the countries of operation, ensuring full compliance with MAG Standard Operating Procedures as well as relevant international frameworks such as the International Ammunition Technical Guidelines (IATG) and the Modular Small Arms Control Implementation Compendium (MOSAIC). A core component of the role will be the planning, management, and delivery of three International Ammunition Technical Courses, two in Lebanon and one in Jordan. These courses are designed to strengthen national capability in ammunition management, covering the full lifecycle management of ammunition and explosives from storage and inspection to risk reduction and disposal.
The position will also support the development and drafting of national Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) and Physical Security and Stockpile Management (PSSM) standards. Working closely with national authorities and programme leadership, the role will help align national systems with the best international practice while ensuring the standards remain practical and relevant to the operational context.
Working closely with the Country Director, Regional WAM Operations Manager, and Senior Technical Advisor, the WAM Technical Lead will support the overall safe execution of MAG’s technical activities in the region. This includes contributing to programme design, providing technical input to proposals and reports, advising on operational risk management, and ensuring the safe handling and storage of technical materials and equipment.
The role will also focus strongly on training, mentoring, and capacity development. You will work directly with national government counterparts, MAG technical staff, and partners to build technical capability in ammunition stockpile management, SALW control, and related safety practices. Through mentoring and structured training delivery, the role will contribute to long-term institutional strengthening within partner organisations.
In addition, the WAM Technical Lead will represent MAG with donors, implementing partners, and national authorities where required, ensuring effective coordination and communication across stakeholders. This role also contributes to internal technical learning and knowledge sharing through participation in MAG’s WAM Community of Practice.
Requirements
You are a highly experienced technical professional with a strong background in weapons and ammunition management, preferably within humanitarian, defence, or security sector environments. You hold a recognised AT or ATO qualification in accordance with IATG 01/90 and have demonstrable experience delivering International Ammunition Technical Courses or equivalent technical training programmes.
You will also hold an IMAS Level 3+ qualification with practical experience in logistic disposals, including large-scale disposals and the disposal of guided weapons and missiles. You possess deep technical knowledge of WAM operations and are confident in applying international frameworks such as IATG and MOSAIC in operational settings.
You bring experience managing and providing technical oversight for WAM projects or operations, including planning and coordinating activities, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and supporting the effective delivery of programme objectives. Your experience includes working closely with national authorities and supporting institutional capacity development in areas such as ammunition stockpile management, SALW control, and risk reduction.
You have strong leadership and people management skills and can lead, motivate, and develop diverse technical teams. You are comfortable mentoring staff, delivering training, and transferring technical knowledge to others in order to strengthen both individual capability and institutional capacity.
You are organised, adaptable, and able to operate effectively in complex and sometimes challenging environments, including working independently for extended periods with limited supervision. You bring strong communication and interpersonal skills that allow you to work effectively with colleagues, government officials, donors, and partner organisations.
You are also comfortable producing clear and accurate technical reports, contributing to proposals and programme documentation, and ensuring that technical activities are properly documented and communicated.
Fluency in English is essential for this position.
