Encounters Film Festival is recruiting for Volunteer Pre-Selectors to review submissions for its 2026 edition

Are you passionate about short films and interested in film curation? Encounters Film Festival is looking for Volunteer Pre-Selectors to help review submissions for the 2026 edition of the festival.

As a Pre-Selector, you’ll play a key role in shaping the festival programme by watching and assessing 100, 150, 200 or 250 short films, depending on your availability. This is a flexible, remote volunteer role, perfect for those eager to gain hands-on experience in festival programming and discover exciting new filmmaking talent.

What you’ll do
  • Watch and evaluate 100, 150, 200 or 250+ short films, with the total number of films you choose to watch up to you, between February – June 2026
  • Provide critical feedback to help shape the festival’s International Competition – a BAFTA, BIFA, and European Film Award qualifying event
  • Participate in optional online discussions with fellow pre-selectors and the festival team
Who we’re looking for
  • Film enthusiasts with a keen eye for storytelling and originality
  • Individuals who can critically engage with fiction, documentary, animation, and experimental films
  • Organised and committed volunteers who can meet agreed deadlines
  • Encounters strongly encourage applications from individuals from underrepresented backgrounds in the film industry and are committed to widening access to film curation
Why get involved?
  • Gain invaluable experience in film programming at one of the UK’s leading short film festivals
  • Discover emerging talent and contribute to a globally recognised festival
  • Receive a free pass to Encounters Film Festival 2026
  • Join a community of film lovers and industry professionals
  • Be part of a pathway – previous pre-selectors have gone on to programme professionally at other festivals and cinemas

This is an unpaid volunteer role with full flexibility to choose your viewing workload. It’s open to applicants worldwide, with a special encouragement for those in the South West of England.
