Volunteer Family Support Worker

ROLE DESCRIPTION

Role Purpose:

Location:

To offer one to one practical and emotional support to families
living in Bath and North East Somerset in their homes or
groups.

Office base at Meade House, Wedgwood Road, Bath, BA2
1QN.  Clients or groups will be located anywhere in Bath and
North East Somerset.

Confidentiality:

The  worker  will  be  expected  to  abide  by  Southside’s
Confidentiality Policy at all times.

Information Governance:

The worker will be expected to follow Southside’s
Information Governance policies and procedures as
defined by the NHS Toolkit.

The below will be dependent on the commitment the volunteer is able to give and their
desire  for  involvement  and  learning.  All  post  requirements  can  be  reasonably  adjusted
according to the volunteer’s commitment.

Main Duties and Responsibilities of the Post:

  To offer practical help, advice and emotional support to families in their homes or

groups.

  To  accompany families  to medical, social care, school or other  appointments  as

agreed with Family Support Manager.

  To provide families with information about other services and help them to access

these services.

  To attend external meetings, staff meetings and training as agreed.

  To maintain detailed notes on the work with families/carers on the database.

Other Duties:

  To attend 1-1s and clinical supervision.

  Work at all times within the policies, procedures and ethos of Southside.

Education and
qualifications

ESSENTIAL

DESIRABLE

A good general standard of education.

Experience

Some knowledge of child development and adult attachment relationships.

Interest in working in community groups.

Experience of working with families with
complex needs. E.g. drugs and alcohol, mental
health issues and domestic and sexual abuse.

Skills and Abilities

Ability to:

  make and keep personal and professional boundaries.
  engage with vulnerable service users and carers in a genuine and respectful way.

recognise the need for and aim of intervention in the lives of parents and carers,
as well as potential dangers and limitations.

  work effectively as a supportive team player as well as on one’s own initiative.

A willingness to utilise technology to perform the role e.g video calls, Microsoft Office and
database.

Pro-active and confident communicator with excellent inter-personal and communication
skills

Knowledge of benefits, housing and
homelessness issues.

Personal qualities

An understanding of risk assessment and risk management.

Self-awareness and the ability to regulate and contain one’s own feelings and behaviour,
and the ability to seek support when needed.

A commitment to being open and curious to
continuous learning.

Hold full driving licence and have access to a
car at all times.
