Position Title: Volunteer ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Teacher for Year 9 student Reports to: Ellen Pearce Location: Client’s home (GL3) Time Commitment: 2-6 hours a week after school Purpose of Role GARAS supports refugees, asylum seekers, and vulnerable migrants. Many of our clients face significant barriers to learning English, due to trauma, displacement, and/or additional needs. As a Volunteer ESOL Teacher, you will be part of a team supporting a young refugee to develop their English language skills in a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment. You will help them achieve their potential and thrive in the UK education system. Key Responsibilities ● Facilitate ESOL sessions for a Year 9 student within the family home. Support their learning in preparation for GCSEs. ● Build the student’s confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. ● Create an inclusive, patient, and supportive learning environment. Recognise that young refugees may have experienced trauma, including significant disruption to their education. ● Prepare sessions and resources appropriate to the student’s individual needs. ● Enable the student to use English in practical, everyday situations. ● Deliver sessions to complement learning and skills development expected of secondary school students in the UK. ● Uphold GARAS safeguarding policies and procedures. Maintain appropriate professional boundaries at all times. ● Report any concerns about the student’s wellbeing to a GARAS member of staff. ● Attend meetings, training, and supervision for volunteers, as required. Skills and Qualities Needed ● Relevant ESOL and/or teaching qualification (e.g. CELTA, TEFL, TESOL, PGCE). Students working towards their teaching qualification may also be considered. ● Friendly, patient, and approachable manner. ● Strong communication skills and ability to adapt to students with varying levels of English or Maths. ● Understanding of (or willingness to learn about) working with individuals who may have experienced trauma. ● Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion. ● Ability to work as part of a team. ● Knowledge and understanding of the principles of safeguarding children and vulnerable adults. Time Commitment ● Minimum of 2 hours per week. ● We ask for a minimum commitment of 6 months to provide continuity for students. Support and Training ● Induction provided by GARAS. ● Ongoing supervision and support from GARAS staff. ● Opportunities to attend relevant training sessions. Additional Notes ● Volunteers must complete an Enhanced DBS check. ● Volunteers must follow GARAS safeguarding policies and procedures when working with children and vulnerable adults. ● Contact with external agencies (e.g. schools, charities, support services) will be conducted by GARAS staff.
