Be there when it matters!

Every volunteer has a reason for giving their time. Your role will be to help them make the biggest possible difference.

At Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, volunteers are an essential part of our team. They provide companionship, practical support and a warm welcome to patients and families at some of the most important moments of their lives. Behind every successful volunteer is someone who has recruited, supported and inspired them to thrive.

We're looking for an enthusiastic and organised Healthcare Volunteer Coordinator to lead and develop volunteering across our hospice services.

About us

Sue Ryder supports people through the most difficult times of their lives. At Thorpe Hall Hospice, we provide specialist palliative and end-of-life care for people living with life-limiting illnesses including cancer, heart failure and respiratory disease.

As the only specialist palliative care inpatient unit in Peterborough, we deliver expert clinical care alongside emotional, practical and spiritual support. Our services extend beyond the hospice through our Hospice at Home team, helping people receive compassionate care in the place they feel most comfortable.

About the role

There is flexibility here on the working pattern- could be 2x6hr days or 3x4 hours days depending on the applicant.

Role will be based at Thorpe Hall, though there will be occasional travel needed to St Johns Hospice (expenses paid for this)

This is an opportunity to shape and grow a volunteer programme that has a direct impact on patient care and family support.

You'll lead the ongoing development of volunteers across a range of services, ensuring every volunteer feels valued, supported and equipped to make a meaningful contribution.

Working closely with clinical and non-clinical teams, you'll identify where volunteers can add the greatest value, match people to rewarding opportunities and help create an inclusive volunteering culture throughout the hospice.

No two days will be the same. One day you might be interviewing prospective volunteers, the next delivering training, supporting a volunteer event, building relationships with community groups or recognising the contribution of long-serving volunteers.

About you

We're looking for someone who genuinely believes in the power of volunteering and understands how to bring out the best in people.

You'll have:

Experience of recruiting, coordinating or managing volunteers
Strong relationship-building and communication skills
Experience of supporting people from a wide range of backgrounds
Good organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities
Knowledge of safeguarding, confidentiality and risk management
Experience of recruitment and selection processes
Confidence delivering presentations, workshops or training sessions
An understanding of volunteer management best practice and relevant legislation
Experience working within healthcare, social care, charity or community settings would be advantageous

Most importantly, you'll be someone who can inspire others, build positive relationships and create an outstanding experience for our volunteers.

Minimum Essential Criteria

Experience of coordinating people, volunteers, projects or services.
Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of people.
Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to maintain accurate records and use IT systems.

Why join us?

This is more than a coordination role. It's an opportunity to help build a volunteer community that supports patients and families when they need it most.

By developing and growing our volunteer programme, you'll help ensure more people receive the compassionate care, companionship and support that Sue Ryder is known for.
