Job Description: Self Employed Violin Teacher Shrewsbury School Position: Violin Teacher Hours: approximately 25 x 40-minute lessons per week plus ensemble coaching Overview Shrewsbury School is seeking an inspiring and highly skilled Violin Teacher to join its successful, vibrant, supportive, and enthusiastic Music Department. There is the potential to split this role between two teachers of the appropriate calibre, to ensure we attract the right candidates for this important position. Key Responsibilities Individual Teaching • Deliver approximately 25 individual violin lessons per week (40 minutes each). • Teach students from beginner level through to highly advanced performers, including pupils preparing for ATCL/LTCL diplomas and music college auditions. • Tailor teaching methods to support diverse learning styles and musical goals. • Prepare students for exams, performances, competitions, and auditions as appropriate. • Maintain accurate lesson records, progress reports, and examination entries. Ensemble Leadership • Conduct the School’s String Orchestra, planning repertoire, rehearsals, and performances. • Assist with the Symphony Orchestra, including sectional rehearsals and concerts. • Support chamber music where appropriate. Contribution to School Music Life • Inspire and encourage pupils to participate fully in the musical life of the school. • Contribute to concerts, recitals, workshops, and other performance opportunities. • Collaborate closely with colleagues in the Music Department to support curriculum and co-curricular activities. • Promote high musical standards and a culture of enjoyment, commitment, and achievement. Person Specification Essential • Exceptional violinist with proven teaching experience at advanced levels. • Experience preparing students for high-level graded exams and performance diplomas (e.g., LTCL). • Experience supporting students pursuing music scholarships or music college entry. • Strong musicianship, including excellent ensemble skills. • Ability to inspire, motivate, and nurture young musicians of all abilities. • Strong communication, organisational skills, and professionalism. Desirable • Experience conducting youth or school orchestras. • Familiarity with a wide range of violin teaching approaches and repertoire. • Interest in contributing to chamber music coaching and broader departmental initiatives.
