Join us as a Trustee

Sheffield United Community Foundation is the official charity of Sheffield United Football Club, working to improve lives and tackle inequalities across Sheffield through sport, education, health and wellbeing, employability and community engagement programmes.

Our activities support people of all ages, from early years to older adults, and are designed to strengthen self-esteem, develop skills, promote healthy and active lifestyles, and empower individuals across the region.

We are now seeking new Trustees to join our Board and support the Foundation’s continued growth, impact and strong governance.

About the Role:

As a Trustee, you will help shape the strategic direction of the charity and ensure we fulfil our mission effectively. The role is voluntary and requires attending four Board meetings per year, alongside occasional sub‑committee or strategic sessions as needed.

Our current Board brings together a diverse range of professional experience, and we are committed to broadening that diversity further to reflect the communities we serve. We particularly welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds and lived experiences.

Key responsibilities:

In line with Charity Commission expectations, Trustees must:

  • Understand and accept the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship, as outlined in the Charity Commission’s Essential Trustee guidance.
  • Ensure the charity complies with its governing document, charity law, and other regulations.
  • Provide strategic leadership, oversight of activities, and support to the Senior Management Team.
  • Contribute to strong governance, financial stewardship, and risk management.

Reflecting updated CC30 guidance, Trustees should also be prepared to:

  • Engage in a skills‑based, inclusive recruitment and governance approach, helping broaden the Foundation’s reach and representation.
  • Participate in an induction process tailored to support your development as an effective trustee.

Person specification:

Essential qualities

  • Strategic thinking, sound judgement and independence of mind.
  • Commitment to the mission of Sheffield United Community Foundation.
  • Ability to challenge constructively and contribute positively to a team setting.
  • Understanding of how community‑based programmes can improve health, wellbeing, education and inclusion outcomes.

Desirable experience

We are particularly interested in individuals with one or more of the following:

  • Experience in Health & Wellbeing, public health or social care.
  • Experience in charity governance or the voluntary/community sector.
  • Skills relating to equality, diversity & inclusion, finance, legal, digital, or impact measurement.

How to apply

Please send the following to Chris Bailey, CEO of Sheffield United Community Foundation:

  • Your current CV.
  • A covering letter explaining why you would like to join the Board and what skills, experience or lived experience you can offer.

Email: chris.bailey@sufc-community.co.uk

We actively encourage people from groups currently under‑represented in charity leadership to apply. Updated Charity Commission guidance emphasises the importance of widening recruitment beyond existing networks to strengthen governance and community connection, and we are committed to doing exactly that.
