PASSIONATE IMPACTFUL HONEST HIGH QUALITY FAIR The Role Job Title: Trustee Expectations 6 trustee meetings per year, held during the day in person or on Teams. 6 sub-committee meetings per year, with actions followed up between meetings. Employment Type: Voluntary Contract Length: Initial 3-year period Purpose of the position As a Trustee you will help govern the Trust, ensuring it remains true to its mission of using the power of football and the club’s platform to deliver positive community outcomes in health, inclusion, education and wellbeing. You will help shape & monitor strategy, ensure good governance, oversee financial health, manage risk, and ensure the organisation delivers maximum benefit to the people of Rochdale. Person Specification – Skills & Qualities (not exhaustive) • • • • • • Commitment to the mission and values of Rochdale AFC Community Trust Relevant experience in one or more of: finance, governance, law, education, health & wellbeing, sport & recreation, fundraising, marketing, community development Ability to think strategically and challenge constructively Good interpersonal skills; ability to work as part of a Board team Integrity, fairness, and good judgment; able to handle confidential and sensitive matters Understanding of or willingness to learn about charity law, regulatory frameworks, safeguarding, risk management Responsibilities Area Duties / Responsibilities Governance & Strategy Help set, review and approve the Trust’s vision, mission, strategic priorities and annual plans. Monitor performance against strategic goals and objectives. Ensure that the Trust complies with its governing documents (e.g. Articles, Constitution), legal & regulatory requirements. Ensure the organisation has appropriate policies (e.g. safeguarding, conflict of interest, equality, health & safety) and that these are reviewed regularly. Financial Stewardship Risk & Compliance Oversee financial health: approve budgets, monitor financial reports, ensure proper controls in place. Ensure funds are used effectively and in line with the Trust’s objectives. Ensure the charity manages its reserves appropriately, and risks associated with financial management are identified and mitigated. Identify major risks (operational, financial, reputational) and ensure there are strategies / systems to manage them. Ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations (charity law, safeguarding, data protection, etc.). Ensure appropriate insurance, reporting and audit processes are in place. Advocacy, Representation & Relationships Act as an ambassador for the Trust: represent it in the community; help build relationships with partners, funders, stakeholders. Support fundraising / income generation efforts (introductions, strategy input). Provide advice or expertise drawing on your skills / networks to strengthen Trust programmes. Board & Meeting Participation Attend Board meetings regularly (prepared, with relevant papers read). Participate actively—ask questions, challenge, contribute to decision-making. Serve on committees or working groups as needed. Ensure decisions of the Board are implemented and followed up. Support & Oversight of Staff / Volunteers Provide oversight of senior management / staff performance. Ensure that volunteer engagement is well managed and politically (and legally) safe. Assist with high-level recruitment, induction or training of key roles (including Trustees where needed). Application Process 3.
