of our much-loved living museum.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway offers a
wide range of experiences for those who love
history, trains, and a unique experience.
Volunteering presents you with the
opportunity to meet new people from all
walks of life. You’ll gain worthwhile skills, and
this can result in a real sense of achievement.
Around 1000 volunteers work in various roles
across the NYMR and they all bring something
unique with them.

OVERVIEW OF TRAVELLING TICKET INSPECTOR
ROLE

The role of the Travelling Ticket Inspector (TTI) is
to ensure that all passengers are in possession
of relevant tickets for their journey. You’ll be the
main contact point on the train, therefore, be able
to engage with our visitors in a friendly and
professional manner. In addition, you’ll provide
the Guard with support when required. A degree
of physical fitness is required as you will be on
your feet for most of the day and be lifting in and
out accessibility ramps.

WHAT’S INVOLVED?

• providing a warm, friendly welcome to all visitors
  as the public face of the NYMR
• checking and selling tickets (cash and card) on
  our travelling trains and taking responsibility for
  cash taken
• develop knowledge about the history of the
  railway, its operation, and the environment
  which we travel through
• resolving problems that my occur whilst on duty
• liaising with passengers to ensure their journey is
  as problem free as possible
• support Station Staff in managing passengers,
  ramp deployment and disposal, and the safe
  dispatch of trains
• assisting the Guard when required to do so. This
  includes ensuring the safety of passengers and
  organising recovery when trains fail and become
  disabled

TRAINING

Full training will be available to support you in
your role, both theoretical and practical. Initially
you will be paired with an experienced TTI and
become a qualified TTI after several training
sessions have been completed and you have
reached the required level of competence.
Assessment will be continuous throughout
training and there will also be a final overall
assessment. Support and advice is available
throughout your journey and there are
opportunities for progression.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

ROSTER:
This is a rostered role where you will be able to
confirm your availability in advance.

WHERE YOU VOLUNTEER:
Onboard departing from Pickering Station
(YO18 7AJ) or Grosmont Station (YO22 5QE)

TIME COMMITMENT:
Usually, a turn lasts for up to 8 hours and we
would be grateful for at least 2 turns per month
during the operating season. You will travel on
various services throughout your turn. We operate
Saturday - Wednesday, normally between March
and October. Special Events also operate outside
these times.

UNIFORM & EQUIPMENT:
We will provide you with a high visibility waistcoat,
name badge and NYMR tie/scarf. For this role as
a public facing volunteer, uniform requirements
appropriate to this role will be discussed with
you. We are unable to provide uniforms but offer
guidance on what is acceptable and how to obtain
these items.
