Temporary Teacher of Mathematics (maternity cover)

Background to the School

Farnborough Hill is an independent Catholic day school and a member of the Girls’ Schools
Association, Independent Schools’ Association and CISC. It welcomes pupils and staff of all faiths and
no faith, provided they are in sympathy with the ethos of the School.

Located on the Hampshire/Surrey border, the School has excellent transport links, both by train and
road being about a 10 minutes’ walk from Farnborough Main station.

Farnborough Hill is committed to the education of the whole person. The School places great emphasis
on the all-round personal growth of its pupils. It aims for academic excellence as well as ensuring that
pupils play a full part in school life and have the opportunities to develop their co-curricular interests.

The School offers Academic, Art, Drama, Music and Sports Scholarships at 11+ as well as means-tested
bursaries for families in need of financial assistance. Sixth Form Scholarships are awarded on the basis
of open examination, as well as for excellence in Creative Arts, Music, Performing Arts and Sport.

In 2025 our A level pupils once again achieved impressive results with an excellent 50% of all grades at
A*/A and 76% A*-B. Our GCSE results were also excellent with 48% of grades awarded at 9-7.

The School’s aim is to engage wholeheartedly in all activities, challenges and opportunities. This is
achieved through our pastoral care and encouragement of each individual. This is a strength of
Farnborough Hill and we see it as an essential part of our caring, Christian ethos. Parents greatly
appreciate this and see it as an important ingredient when choosing to send their daughters here.

The School is housed in the historic home of the ex-Empress Eugenie of France, to which much
purpose-built school accommodation, such as the sports hall, swimming pool, Art and Design
Technology Centre, modern laboratories, theatre, a music suite and hockey all-weather pitch have
been added, with an inspiring new Sixth Form Centre which opened in September 2022. These facilities
sit within approximately 65 acres of parkland making it a tranquil and inspiring place to work, alongside
a forward-looking and ambitious Senior Leadership Team and governing body

The Mathematics Department
The Mathematics Department currently consists of 5 full-time and 2 part-time members of staff, who
enjoy a shared staff workroom. There are four dedicated Mathematics classrooms and several smaller
seminar-style classrooms for A level teaching.

The Mathematics Department broadly follows the National Curriculum. In Years 7 to 9 pupils are
placed in sets, and in Years 10 and 11 this increases the number of sets, typically with two parallel
middle groups. Setting is based on internal tests, examinations and overall effort and attainment and
is deliberately fluid, allowing free movement between groups as necessary for individual pupils.

Initially, all pupils in Years 10 and 11 are prepared for the Higher Tier GCSE course with the AQA
Examination Board. This decision is continually reviewed in the lowest set and some pupils may be
entered at Foundation level, according to what will most benefit the pupil. Examination results within
the department at GCSE are high, with 48% of pupils gaining 9 – 7 grades in 2025. At A level, over 76%
of pupils gained A or A* in 2025.

Mathematics is a popular choice at A level with the option of Further Mathematics available for the
most able pupils. The department currently follows the Edexcel course for both Mathematics and
Further Mathematics. The options choices for Further Mathematics are Further Pure 1 and Further
Pure 2. It is usual to have at least one, and often more, Mathematics candidates for Oxbridge each
year. The department runs STEP, MAT and TMUA preparation lessons as needed to support
applications to study Mathematics at competitive universities.

The department organises a number of co-curricular events and activities to enhance the learning and
enjoyment of Mathematics. For example, pupils have visited Winchester Cathedral to explore sacred
geometry and Bletchley Park to investigate Mathematics in a variety of contexts. The Sixth Form
mathematicians attend Maths Fest, which features speakers such as Simon Singh. The department also
encourages pupils to take part in the UKMT Mathematical challenges and the Maths Olympiad for Girls,
and have enjoyed success at all levels, with several pupils being invited to enter for the ‘kangaroo’
challenges and the Olympiad. Teams of pupils are also entered for the UKMT Team Challenges. Pupils
are also encouraged to participate in The National Cipher Challenge and similar events.

Teacher of Mathematics
This post is suitable for an experienced teacher, a returner to the profession or an Early Career
Teacher (when full induction will be given). The successful applicant will be able to teach Mathematics
throughout the School up to GCSE level and A level. An ability to teach Further Mathematics would
be advantageous, but not essential.
