Teaching Assistant

Prep School (Forms 1–6) Term time only

Pownall Hall School, Wilmslow

Pownall Hall School is a small, independent prep school where children are known, supported and challenged to do their best. Set within eight acres of beautiful grounds in Wilmslow, we educate children from six months to 11 years in an environment that values kindness, confidence and strong relationships alongside academic ambition.

We are proud of our close-knit community. Staff work collaboratively, children are treated as individuals, and families feel part of school life. Safeguarding and pupil wellbeing sit at the centre of everything we do, and we expect the same commitment from all who join our team.

We are seeking an experienced Teaching Assistant to join our Prep School. Rather than recruiting for a single year group, we are keen to hear from high-quality candidates whose experience, professionalism and values make them a strong fit for Pownall. Appointments may be across Forms 1 to 6, depending on strengths and school needs.

The role

This is a varied and rewarding role, supporting children both academically and pastorally within small classes. You will work closely with Form Teachers and subject specialists, contributing to lessons, supporting individual pupils and helping to maintain the calm, purposeful classroom environments Pownall is known for.

The role is term time only, with the option to work in our on-site Holiday Quest provision during school holidays, should you wish.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has

previous experience as a Teaching Assistant, ideally within an independent school setting
  • Understands the balance between academic support and pastoral care

  • Is calm, observant and responsive to children’s needs

  • Can support pupils individually or in small groups with confidence and discretion

  • Communicates professionally with colleagues and parents

  • Takes safeguarding responsibilities seriously and consistently

  • Is flexible, proactive and committed to being part of school life

NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) is preferred.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting teaching and learning in the classroom under the direction of teaching staff

  • Working with individual pupils or small groups to reinforce learning and build confidence

  • Supporting children’s social, emotional and physical wellbeing

  • Observing and feeding back on pupil progress to teachers

  • Assisting with preparation of learning materials and resources

  • Supporting children during lessons, break times and transitions around school

  • Contributing positively to staff meetings, training and professional development

This role requires flexibility and initiative. Duties may evolve in response to pupils’ needs and the wider life of the school.

What we offer

  • A supportive, respectful staff culture

  • Small class sizes and strong professional relationships

  • Opportunities for professional development and training

  • Competitive salary and benefits

  • Beautiful grounds and well-resourced teaching spaces

  • The chance to make a genuine difference to children’s school experience

Salary: £21,475 per annum (based on NVQ Level 3)

Interviews will be held on a rolling basis. The vacancy will close once suitable appointments have been made.
