Job Description: Teacher of Science (Chemistry, Biology or
Physics specialism)

Location:

Kingswood Senior School

Responsible to:

Relevant Head of Department

Job Purpose

• To teach general Science at KS3, and KS4 and KS5 Science in the specialism subject. The ability to offer

at least two Sciences at KS4 would be preferable.

• To contribute to aspects of life in a busy boarding and day school, including the co-curricular

programme.

The Department

The Science faculty at Kingswood is the biggest in the school with over 60 pupils studying each
Science at A Level, and many pupils electing to study more than one Science at this level. Outcomes
at A Level are impressive and Chemistry, Biology and Physics regularly attain above the school-wide
average at A Level (>80% A*-B). Our pupils also achieve excellent outcomes in their STEM University
applications, regularly achieving offers for study at Oxbridge, Imperial and other top UK universities.
We also have an excellent track-record of helping our pupils secure medical and Veterinary Science
offers, with eight pupils holding offers this year. The sciences are particularly popular at A Level with
new Year 12 pupils who join the Kingswood boarding community from around the world. Families
are attracted to the quality of teaching, the exceptional outcomes and the intellectual challenge that
is offered beyond the classroom.

At KS4 the majority of our pupils study triple Science and achieve excellent results, with 82%
achieving grade 7-9 across all three subjects last year. We follow the Edexcel iGCSE syllabus and
pupils enjoy the opportunity to complete plenty of practical work alongside their theory, with each
department benefitting from the support of a full-time subject specialist technician.

KS3 Science is taught as a separate subject by multiple teachers from a mixture of the three subject
specialisms. There is also a dedicated KS3 technician. The department occupies a specifically
equipped laboratory, with access to nine other labs of separate science disciplines, a Lecture
Theatre, a prep room and a staff study space. The department is well stocked with all the usual
scientific materials, as well as lots of specialist equipment to enable the practical aspects of the KS3
course to be delivered successfully.

Science is an area of growth at Kingswood and we have recently developed exciting new outreach
and enrichment opportunities for our own pupils and those of local partner schools. These include a
Mock Mini Interview (MMI) evening, a Science roadshow, working with the Design, Technology and
Engineering department as the South West hub for STEM Racing and work with the Royal Institution.
There are currently 22 members of staff and four subject expert technicians in the faculty. We are
looking for a professional, highly qualified subject specialist who wants to join us at this exciting time
to ensure the continued success of our pupils and enjoy the growth of this key faculty.
