Teacher of Mathematics
Teacher of Mathematics – from September 2026
The Appointment
We are seeking to appoint a good honours graduate to teach Mathematics throughout the school from September 2026. The College provides statutory induction for New Qualified Teachers (NQTs) and will assist graduate entrants to the profession to gain QT status. We expect that the successful candidate will want to contribute to the wider life of the Mathematics department as well as to the College’s extra-curricular programme.
The appointment will be made by the Head Master who will be assisted by the Head of Mathematics and members of the College’s Senior Management team.
The Mathematics Department
At present there are ten teachers of Mathematics at Lancing: The Head of Mathematics, four other full-time teachers, two teachers having other subject or management responsibilities and three part time members. Full-time teachers are all graduates in Mathematics or a closely related discipline.
Departmentmental meetings take place at the start of each term and irregularly through each term according to requirements. There is an agenda for each meeting and teachers can raise matters of business that concern them. There is a departmental handbook, updated annually, setting out our policies, schemes of work and listing both online and paper resources.
Pupils in Third to Fifth forms (Years 9 to 11) are grouped into six or seven sets of approximately 10-20 pupils broadly by mathematical ability. All teachers can expect to be assigned to sets at any level and in any year group.
Year 11 pupils are entered for International GCSE. Results for IGCSE in 2025 for entries were:
9 8 7 6 5 4 30% 26% 16% 16% 7% 5%
Some pupils are also entered for ‘Additional Mathematics’ in Year 11; results in 2025 included 19 at grade A.
Homework, called evening school, is set regularly and it is departmental policy that it be marked and returned to pupils with feedback.
Sixth Form pupils are also grouped into sets for Mathematics or Mathematics with Further Mathematics broadly by mathematical ability. Mathematics is the most popular choice at A Level and we have a strong take-up for Mathematics with Further Mathematics. Results for Mathematics in 2025 for 55 entries were:
A* A B C D E/U 25% 33% 24% 7% 7% 4%
Teachers of Sixth Form Mathematics can expect to be assigned to sets at any level and, ideally, to any of the disciplines within the specification. Sets vary in size, but a typical number of pupils would be 13. Departmental standardised pupil assessment takes the form of regular progress tests every half term.
There is a programme in place for gifted pupils including the UKMT Mathematics Challenge and Olympiad competitions.
We are a partner school for the Sussex University PGCE programme and have received trainees from that course. In addition, members of the department have obtained qualified teacher status via the Graduate Teacher Programme at Sussex University. We believe that professional qualifications and continuing professional development are essential for the success of our department. Any unqualified member of the department would be encouraged to train for a professional qualification and would be supported by the Head of Department as mentor. Peer review is part of our professional development, and all teachers take part in this process each academic year. The Head of Mathematics also observes each teacher at least once a year.
All classrooms in Mathematics are fitted with interactive projectors onto whiteboards, as well as more traditional whiteboards. All classrooms have data projectors. Registration and reporting is effected via an online database, iSAMs. Web access is available for the College’s IT network.
The IT Department provides support in the production of resources: both online and paper resources such as notes and examination papers.
