Job purpose

•  To teach English throughout the School, potentially including up to Sixth Form for the right

candidate.

•  To contribute to all aspects of life in a busy boarding and day school, including the co-curricular

programme.

English Department Information:

The English department consists of a highly experienced team of seven full-time English teachers and
one part-time teacher.

The  English  department  at  Kingswood  School  believes  in  helping  students  to  develop  into  lifelong
readers, writers and thinkers. Students will leave us as independent, imaginative adults who are both
confident and accurate in their expression, and they will continue to be curious and critical throughout
their lives.

English  Language  and  English  Literature  are  popular  subjects  at  A  Level;  each  year  a  number  of
students go on to read English at university, usually at Russell Group institutions and, regularly,  at
Oxbridge. English enjoys close  links with the excellent  school library, with EAL, and with the  Study
Support department.

The  department  is  well-equipped  and  centrally  located,  close  to  the  school’s  superb  multi-media
library, run by a qualified and very experienced Librarian and Assistant Librarian who actively promote
the reading of fiction to all age groups. There are six dedicated English classrooms housed in the main
school  building  and  generous  display  space  within  the  department.  Classrooms  are  equipped
projectors, visualisers and interactive whiteboards.

The English department has various multimedia subscriptions, including Theatre Online. The English
office  is  furnished with comfortable  working  space  and  holds  a  library of  professional  and course-
related books.

The  English curriculum is diverse, and exciting. We consciously blend the traditional literary canon
with more contemporary writers, including writers from various cultures.

We currently prepare students to sit CIE iGCSE English Language and Literature (we are considering a
move to Edexcel iGCSE for Literature); at A Level we follow the AQA B syllabus for Literature and the
WJEC Eduqas course for Language. The also teach the AFA in Creative Writing as an Advanced Elective
for Sixth Form. The school day comprises seven periods of 50-55 minutes.

At KS3, students have five or six English periods per fortnight; at KS4 students have eight periods per
fortnight, culminating in iGCSE English and English Literature examinations. Students taking A Level
English Language or Literature have twelve lessons per fortnight across two teachers.

The successful candidate will be able to teach English at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5. The post holder will be
expected  to  show  initiative  in  contributing  to  the  development  of  the  department  through  their
particular specialisms and interests.

As an independent school, we believe in promoting the broadest possible pupil development in all
areas of life, including academic, physical, spiritual and inter-personal. The successful candidate will
be  expected  to  show  commitment  through  their  contribution  to  the  wider  life  of  the  school.
Kingswood  has  a  high  reputation  for  its  extensive  extra-curricular  programme  and  all  staff  are
expected to contribute to the programme as part of their regular school routine.

Departmental activities over the past few years have included: Junior and Senior Debating Societies;
Reading Clubs; Creative Writing; and the Literary Society, which encourages discussion of books, films,
and topics beyond those specified for A Level. We enjoy close links with the Bath Literature festival
and we also welcome visiting authors on a regular basis.

Key duties & Responsibilities

•  Have a collaborative approach to the planning of units of work.
•  Bring individuality and creativity to lesson planning.

Increase students’ confidence in all aspects of English studies.
•  Foster a love of learning, and a love of English within students.
•  Prepare students for public examination.
•  Develop independent learning skills within students.
•  Mark, record and monitor pupils’ work, in accordance with department policies.
•  Report on student progress, in line with reporting policies.
•  Attend Parents’ Evenings, as appropriate.

You will be expected to:

•  Conduct yourself with professionalism, tact and diplomacy at all times as a representative of Kingswood
•  Observe health and safety procedures and work safely at all times
•  To comply with all school policies and procedures including reporting any concerns to the appropriate

person in relation to those covering child protection, health, safety, welfare, security, confidentiality and
data protection.

Essential Qualifications, experience and skills

You will have:

•  A University degree and QTS status (pending QTS status is acceptable)
•  Specialism in English
•  Up-to-date pedagogical knowledge
•  Experience of teaching within the British Education System
•  Recent experience of GCSE teaching through current post or ITT placement
•  The ability to work independently and proactively and as part of a team
•  Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to interact appropriately with others within the school

community

•  Recent experience of A level teaching through current post or ITT placement
•  Knowledge of national changes to English education
•  Flair and creativity in lesson planning
