The Art and Digital Media Department

The Art and Digital Media Department is one of the most vibrant and dynamic departments at Sedbergh
School, with thriving numbers and outstanding results. The Department aims to encourage pupils’
imaginative and perceptual abilities, by visual and tactile means, developing skills in a variety of media
through experimentation and innovation for each individual to fulfil their potential for communication
visually. To achieve this end an environment is created in the classroom which is both stimulating and
enjoyable.
All pupils study Art in Year 9, exploring different aspects of the subject through a carousel timetable. In Year
10, pupils may choose GCSE Art & Design (AQA) or GCSE Photography (AQA). At A Level, pupils may choose
A Level Art & Design (AQA) or Digital Media (Cambridge International).

Curriculum

Digital Media
We follow the Cambridge Internationals Specification. Pupils learn how to create films, animations as well
as develop their skills in photography using both digital and traditional methods. Knowledge of either
Photoshop or light room are essential. There are three components which make up the A Level course.
Components 1 and 2 are taught in year 12. These results from these two components combined allow for
pupils to achieve an AS Level. The third component is delivered in year 13 allowing pupils to achieve an A-
Level (AS grades become 50% of the total mark and C3 marks contributing to 50% of the overall grade).
Pupils are encouraged to have their own camera and laptop.

Photography
We follow the AQA art and design specification. Pupils are expected to complete 2 portfolio projects across
the two-year course. (60% of the grade) the additional 40% is derived from the externally set assignment
which is rolled out in year 11. Pupils study a range of skills and techniques using traditional dark room
methods as well as digital methods. The pupils learn about the history of photography and experience a
vast range of techniques during the course. Including pin hole photography.

The Department is well-resourced, with specialist teachers and dedicated teaching rooms. Student
numbers have increased rapidly in recent years. The enthusiasm demonstrated by the Department’s staff is
infectious, and many pupils regularly attend optional Open Sessions on activities afternoons and at the
weekend. There are currently two Teachers of Art, Photography and Digital Media.

The School operates a two week timetable with lessons lasting for 55 minutes in the morning and 50 in the
afternoon. There are three lessons on a Saturday morning. The role would be for a 0.5 full-time Equivalent
teacher. This would comprise 22 periods of teaching out of a 45-period normal allocation on our two-week
timetable.

Facilities
The Department consists of three Art Studios, including a dark room, a dedicated pottery room, and a
whole world outside the classroom of inspirational natural landscapes. There is also a well-stocked library
area which pupils use for private study.
