Teacher of Design and Technology
TEACHER OF DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (PART-TIME)
Background to the School
Farnborough Hill is an independent Catholic day school and a member of the Girls’ Schools Association, Independent Schools’ Association and CISC. It welcomes pupils and staff of all faiths and no faith, provided they are in sympathy with the ethos of the School.
Located on the Hampshire/Surrey border, the School has excellent transport links, both by train and road being about a 10 minutes’ walk from Farnborough Main station.
Farnborough Hill is committed to the education of the whole person. The School places great emphasis on the all-round personal growth of its pupils. It aims for academic excellence as well as ensuring that pupils play a full part in school life and have the opportunities to develop their co-curricular interests.
The School offers Academic, Art, Drama, Music and Sports Scholarships at 11+ as well as means-tested bursaries for families in need of financial assistance. Sixth Form Scholarships are awarded on the basis of open examination, as well as for excellence in Creative Arts, Music, Performing Arts and Sport.
In 2025 our A level pupils once again achieved impressive results with an excellent 50% of all grades at A*/A and 76% A*-B. Our GCSE results were also excellent with 48% of grades awarded at 9-7.
The School’s aim is to engage wholeheartedly in all activities, challenges and opportunities. This is achieved through our pastoral care and encouragement of each individual. This is a strength of Farnborough Hill and we see it as an essential part of our caring, Christian ethos. Parents greatly appreciate this and see it as an important ingredient when choosing to send their daughters here.
The School is housed in the historic home of the ex-Empress Eugenie of France, to which much purpose-built school accommodation, such as the sports hall, swimming pool, Art and Design Technology Centre, modern laboratories, theatre, a music suite and hockey all-weather pitch have been added, with an inspiring new Sixth Form Centre which opened in September 2022. These facilities sit within approximately 65 acres of parkland making it a tranquil and inspiring place to work, alongside a forward-looking and ambitious Senior Leadership Team and governing body.
FARNBOROUGH HILL
The Design and Technology Department
The Design and Technology and Food Department is lively, forward looking and successful and enjoys a close working relationship with the Art Department. It currently consists of one full-time and two part-time members of staff, covering DT, Graphics and Food. There are also two part-time technicians.
The Design and Technology and Food Department consists of a dedicated suite of well-equipped and resourced specialist rooms, with interactive whiteboards, and a computer room. The bespoke Food Technology room is located in a different area of the School. All teachers have access to a PC and iPad.
Design Technology is offered at A level using the AQA specification. The department further enhances the girls’ experiences by attending inspiring university lectures, visiting exhibitions and museums to access innovative technology, art and design. Visiting speakers are also invited into the department to share their expertise.
The GCSE Design and Technology course is currently taught using the AQA specification, as is the GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition course.. Years 10 and 11 are taught in mixed ability groups. We expect the majority of pupils will gain Grades A* - B at A level and Grades 9 – 5 at GCSE.
In Years 7 and 8, pupils are taught in mixed-ability classes on a carousel basis, spending approximately a term in each subject area, namely Design and Technology, Food and Graphics. Here they learn to work independently and safely in the practical environment. These exciting courses focus on developing high-level practical skills and they place an emphasis on the choice and management of resources and will give pupils the confidence to make justified decisions. Design and Technology and Food, alongside Art and Design, are Year 8 option subjects offered for pupils who wish to continue their interest into Year 9 and have two lessons per week for the year. These provide an excellent foundation for those who wish to continue their study further at GCSE.
Design and Technology and Food teachers actively encourage pupils to compete in competitions with considerable success; these include the Teentech Awards and Starpack Competition. Design and Technology teachers are invited to select suitable Year 10 candidates to apply for the Arkwright Scholarship. For the last three years we have had successful candidates for Arkwright Scholarships.
Co-curricular clubs are offered within the department, such as Teentech Club, STEM Racing and set design club as well as open workshops.

This part-time post is suitable for an enthusiastic and talented teacher or a returner to the profession. The successful applicant will be able to teach DT (Product Design) up to and including A level. The ability to offer some Art and Design as a supporting subject would be desirable.
