2.   Overall Purpose of the Job

•

To  undertake  the  general  maintenance  of  grounds  and  outdoor  areas  of  all
properties  owned  and  managed  by  the  Shetland  Recreational  Trust,  although
primarily at the Clickimin Complex and North Mainland Leisure Centre. This will
include  grass  cutting,  mechanical  sweeping  of  the  astro  pitch,  painting,
maintaining car parks, drainage, entrances, paving and general assistance to other
SRT Maintenance Staff.

The  postholder  will  report  to  the  Technical  Services  Manager  or  Technical  Services
Supervisor  through  daily  contact  by  phone  or  in  person.  Seasonal  Maintenance
Assistants could be working at various locations over a wide geographical area, but
primarily between Clickimin Complex and North Mainland Leisure Centre, sometimes
on their own (lone working) but generally at facilities which are manned.

Contacts:  Internal  –  Technical  Services  Manager,  Technical  Services  Supervisor,

Centre Managers and Staff.

External  –  Suppliers,  Site  Contractors,  Customers  and  Members  of  the
General Public

4.   Principal Accountabilities

1.  To cut grass and strim landscaped areas: operating strimmer’s, pedestrian mowers

and a range of specific ride-on machinery as required.

2.  To maintain all grassed areas and edges to an appropriate standard.

3.  To  maintain  all  grassed  areas  and  synthetic  pitch  areas  to  a  required  standard

regularly.

4.  To maintain the running track at the Clickimin Complex,  track inspection for litter
and debris  and  ensure  that  sandpits for athletic  events  and  training  are  safe  and
suitable for use.

5.  To  regularly  inspect  and  monitor  all  outdoor  areas  by  picking  up  litter,  emptying

litter bins and pressure washing where necessary.

6.  To  assist  with  gardening  maintenance,  weeding  of  flowerbeds,  shrubs,  trees  and

regularly cleaning leaf and litter from public areas.

7.  To  undertake  general  labouring  work;  painting  perimeter  fences,  keeping  all

equipment storage buildings and outdoor storage areas clean and tidy.

8.  To line mark the sports fields and athletic grounds, as required and in accordance

with event calendars throughout the year.

9.  To  check  and  report  any  items  or  equipment  or  work  situation  to  the  Technical
Services  Supervisor  or  Manager,  which  may  be  considered  being  of  an  unsafe
nature, unusual occurrence or damage / vandalism which has taken place.

10.  To ensure that all work equipment is used correctly, maintained in good working

order and regularly inspected/serviced.

11.  The postholder will be expected to be responsible in their behaviour and to act in a
polite  and  helpful  manner  with  all  aspects  of  their  work  involving  contact  with
customers and the general public.

12.  To take part in relevant training courses and development activities as directed by
the Shetland Recreational Trust to maintain and improve knowledge and skills for
the role.

13.  To follow Shetland Recreational Trust’s policies and procedures.

14.  To undertake any other duties that may be considered appropriate for the role.

15.  From time to time, the SRT may require the postholder to undertake duties outside

those specified.

Experience / Qualifications

Essential

1.  Ability  or  experience  in  grass  cutting  and  associated  equipment  or  ability  to

learn through internal training and induction.

2.  Willingness to work or being outdoors for the majority of the day.

6.   Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Essential

1.  Full and valid driving licence and willing to travel across a wide geographical
area within Shetland to attend at all SRT facilities if necessary, with a company
vehicle.

2.  Physically  able  for  work  outdoors  involving  a  lot  of  walking,  bending  and

manual handling.

3.  General  understanding  of  Health  and  Safety  Regulations  relating  to

maintenance works and safe operation of machinery and equipment.

4.  Good  verbal  communication  skills  for  effective  team  work  and  liaison  with

staff, customers and the general public.

5.  Ability  to  work  without  direct  supervision,  demonstrating  motivation  and

initiative.

Supervisor, through daily contact in person.

Place of Work:

You  will  be  allocated  a  regular  place  of  work  however  employees  may  be
required to work at an alternative Shetland Recreational Trust venue during
their career with us if required

Hours of Work:

Full  time  hours  are  37  hours  exclusive  of  breaks  with  working  hours  as
arranged with your manager. Part time hours are offered on a pro rata basis

Disclosure checks:  You  will  require  a  Criminal  Records  check  with  Disclosure  Scotland;  either
membership  of  the  Protection  of  Vulnerable  Groups  Scheme  or  Level  1
Disclosure. Employment, if offered, will be subject to satisfactory reports.

Pay:

Your rate of pay is based on the grade for your job description.  Where grades
have more than one level, placement is normally at the bottom of the grade.
For contracted staff progression takes place annually on the 1st of the month
following  your  12  month  anniversary  in  post,  subject  to  satisfactory
performance.

In addition to basic salary, a distant island allowance is payable at a nationally
agreed  rate.    Part-time  Employees’  island  allowance  will  be  calculated  on  a
pro-rata basis.

Payment Method:

Paid monthly, by bank transfer in arrears

Previous Service:

Previous service with a relevant organisation under the Redundancy Payments
(Continuity  of  Employment  in  Local  Government,  etc.)  (Modification)  Order
1999 as amended will be recognised in accordance with that Order.

Probationary Period: Your  employment  is  subject  to  an  initial  probationary  period  of  six  months
during which your performance will be monitored.   This probationary period
may be extended by the Trust at its discretion. At the end of the probationary
period, your performance will be evaluated and the Trust will confirm in writing
with you its decision regarding your continued employment.

Your employment may be terminated on one week’s notice given by the Trust
at any time during or at the end of your probationary period (including any
extensions to the probationary period).

Annual Holidays:

The Trust’s holiday year runs from 1 January to 31 December.

Employees are entitled to 20 days’ paid annual holiday entitlement each year.
After 5 years’ continuous service with the Trust, the Employee will be entitled
to 5 additional annual leave days.
Part-time  Employees  will  accrue  annual  holiday  entitlement  on  a  pro-rata
basis.

Public Holidays:

Employees are entitled to 13 days’ public holidays each year.  Employees will
be informed of the relevant dates at the start of each holiday year.

Part-time Employees’ public holiday entitlement will be calculated on a pro-
rata basis.

Sick Pay:

If  you  are  absent  from  work  due  to  sickness  or  injury  and  comply  with  the
requirements of the Trust’s absence procedure, you will be paid Statutory Sick
Pay in accordance with the provisions of the legislation.

In addition to Statutory Sick Pay, you may also be entitled to receive Trust Sick
Pay, provided that all terms and conditions relating to the payment of Trust
Sick Pay are adhered to.

Pension:

Three months after commencement, if you are eligible, you can apply to be
enrolled into our Pension Scheme by the Local Government Pension scheme
(LGPS).  The  Trust  has  opted  out  of  the  state  pension  scheme  and  a
contracting-out certificate is in force.

Notice:

You are required to give one month’s notice to terminate your employment.
