WORK FOR US
At Free to Be Kids, we’re on a mission to ensure every young person in London has the opportunity for joy, exploration, and self-discovery within their childhood. While poverty, trauma, and other hardships can overshadow these experiences, we’re dedicated to creating transformative experiences that help children to build confidence and better see their own potential.
We’re a small charity with a big heart, growing fast! Join our close-knit team and you’ll gain valuable experience of growth within an ambitious and developing organization. Whatever your role, you’ll have the opportunity to play a direct role on our residential projects, seeing first-hand the difference our work makes to vulnerable children.
We offer competitive salaries and benefits packages for all roles, as well as the chance to be part of something truly transformative. If you’re passionate about going above and beyond to support children’s emotional health, we’d love to hear from you!
We recognise the incredible value that diversity of all kinds brings to our team and through this to our children’s experiences of the world. We particularly encourage applications from candidates from groups who are traditionally under represented within the charity sector and those who have had life experiences similar to those our children may be facing.
CURRENT VACANCIES
ABOUT THE ROLE:
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Free to Be staff team for the summer 2026 season! Your role will be to support the project team throughout the summer season, working in the role of ‘Assistant Youth Worker’. The main responsibilities of this role are:
- Take a proactive, energetic, positive and prominent role in setting the professional, warm, fun, energetic, vibrant atmosphere of project weeks.
- Specifically, the purpose of the role is to increase the quality of interactions between adult volunteers and children across the project, by role modelling the positive, fun, energetic, engaged, interested, active style we want all adults on our projects to employ.
- In the back of the minibus you will be in charge of setting the tone and creating a positive atmosphere – judging when to get games going, ensuring young people are engaged whether in group games or quiet chats with other adults, both to increase their enjoyment of the project but also because setting this atmosphere, judging when to bring the energy up and down, filling the space with our voices and positive energy rather than leaving it empty to be filled by whatever the kids bring that day, helps very significantly to proactively manage behaviour in minibuses.
- You will play a similar key ‘positive atmosphere setting’ role at other key points of the residential day i.e. bouncy castle time, bedtimes etc.
- You will also help the Trip Leader respond to behavioural issues which arise, in particular by modelling how to ‘be alongside’ children who are struggling to regulate.
- You will help model to newer volunteers the best approach for getting to know young people, where ‘the line is’ with children who are struggling with boisterousness, high energy; how to have fun with the kids and engage them in a ‘leading from the front’ way.
- Generally to support the quality of the project by supporting the Project Coordinators with whatever tasks they need your assistance with.
As a small but fast growing charity, we may also, from time to time, ask you to step in and support with other tasks in line with the development of the organisation, or to take on other roles on projects where staffing needs require it (e.g. Group Leading, Kitchen Crew, Floating Support).
In order to deliver this role effectively, the successful candidate needs to have experienced our projects as one of our young people and have been a volunteer on multiple of our projects so that they have the appropriate understanding of both sides of our work. They must also be 18+.
You’ll be joining a wonderful, vibrant staff team of 11, supplemented by a diverse and committed group of volunteers. We believe we are a special group of humans committed to creating change for some of London’s most disadvantaged children and we’re looking for the next key cog in our management line up. If that sounds like you, we’d love to read your application.
