Job Description Post: Subject Leader Under the direction of the Head and Senior Leadership Team the Subject Leader has the following responsibilities: • To be responsible for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. • To be committed to, and lead successfully, subject excellence for all. • To create a stimulating, inspiring and aspiring environment in which to learn. • To plan, review and evaluate the curriculum, ensuring that schemes of learning are refreshed each year with updates to keep their subject engaging and dynamic. • To ensure that schemes of learning meet the needs of pupils of all abilities and needs. • To identify opportunities to address spiritual, moral, social and cultural dimensions and thinking skills in schemes of learning. • To ensure that the departmental subject area on the VLE (Firefly) is engaging and supports the pupils’ learning effectively. • To contribute to the preparation of onwards references for pupils as necessary. • To promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance within schemes of learning and to model these values in one’s everyday professional life. • Through CPD, to maintain an up to date knowledge and understanding of developments in their subject area and in education generally. • To develop opportunities beyond timetabled lessons for pupils to engage further with their subject. • To ensure that the teaching within their department is successful and encourages positive take up of their subject beyond compulsory study. • To engage regularly with the tracking of pupil data in order to oversee the assessment of pupil performance and attainment within their subject area. • To oversee the process of internal examination setting and marking within their department. • To act as the next line of communication, after the Subject Teacher, between parents and school. • To foster good home-school relationships through regular contact with parents when problems arise. • To promote high standards of behaviour by encouraging pupils to honour the school’s ethos. • To encourage good academic progress, support advice given from other staff and monitor achievement. • To hold minuted departmental meetings according to the schedule of meetings and to forward copies of the minutes to the relevant distribution list within 48 hours of the meeting being held. • To attend parents’ evenings as required. • To attend recruitment events and curriculum evenings as required. • To submit examination entries to the Examinations Officer and undertake efficiently any other administration for their subject. • To review and evaluate the performance of the department and produce annual departmental planning objectives in line with the annual report to Academic Governors. • To be responsible for the effective application for, and subsequent spending of, the department budget. • To produce risk assessments for departmental facilities. • To implement and follow all school policies. • To contribute to the process of school development as and when required. • To carry out any reasonable tasks as directed by the Head. This job description may be subject to amendment upon the mutual agreement of the Head and the individual member of staff.
