Job Description

About Police Now

We are working towards a day when every community, whatever the socio-economic background of its residents, can thrive without being fearful of crime. We are looking for talented, committed and mission-aligned individuals who will drive us towards achieving our ambitions.

Police Now recruits and trains graduates and career changers with leadership potential to become inspirational police officers and outstanding crime fighters on our National Graduate Programme. Graduates can pursue a variety of specialisms working in Neighbourhood Policing, as a Detective or within Counter Terrorism or Economic Crime units.

Police Now aims to create systemic change. We need highly capable impactful staff to support the recruitment and development of our officers and to cultivate strong relationships with partner forces and the wider sector.

The purpose of your role

The Academy Stream Manager role is critical to the success of the Police Now academy, playing a central role in the frontline delivery of the academy. You will line manage and mentor a group of 8 – 10 Syndicate Leads (typically sergeant rank) from numerous forces from across England and Wales and second line manage their student officers throughout the 13-week academy. You’ll need to provide energy, enthusiasm, and confident leadership from the very beginning, role modelling the highest standards of personal and professional behaviour to your Syndicate Leads and student officers. As an influential communicator and leader,
you will play a huge role in setting and supporting the academy culture to support the delivery of a truly outstanding training experience.

You will be part of the Management Team at the academy, reporting directly to the Head of Academy and contributing to the daily decision making, horizon scanning and looking ahead in the fast-paced environment. You will be expected to facilitate some lessons for the participants and will receive full training and support for this. This is a significant operational challenge and will suit a candidate with exceptional leadership potential and experience leading of groups of mixed ability and experience. We are looking for credible and operational experience in a dynamic policing environment as well as oversight of delivery of quality operational police work by more junior staff. Experience of investigations and/or neighbourhood policing is desirable, but not essential.

Key responsibilities

  • Build, develop and lead the delivery of the Police Now Syndicate Lead Course prior to Academy start
  • Line manage a team of 8 – 10 Syndicate Leads, maintaining accountability for their performance throughout the period.
  • Take overall responsibility for ensuring your stream of participants complete the academy to the required standard, passing their assessments and that they are ready to land in force to begin the next phase of their training.
  • Take responsibility for the day-to-day running of the academy, working as part of the Senior Leadership Team to manage risks, contribute to decisions and find solutions to issues that arise. Take an active role in planning ahead and ensuring the continued success of the academy.
  • Work in close collaboration with Police Now HQ staff, other Stream Managers and wider Syndicate Lead team to foster a positive, productive and collaborative team culture.
  • Attend daily management meetings to make strategic plans and resolve any issues that have arisen.
  • Teach and facilitate a small number of lessons and practice sessions (content will be provided by Police Now).
  • Act as a welfare officer for Syndicate Leads and, if necessary, for participants.
  • Respond to any safeguarding issues that arise, liaising with the Head of Academy and relevant stakeholders (e.g. force SPOCs) as required.

Key Requirements:

  • Experience of delivering frontline policing activity effectively, including the use of core police officer skills such as stop and search, arrest and present to custody, and interviewing suspects.
  • You will have served as police inspector or detective inspector in a substantive, temporary or acting post or retired in service as such, with an exemplary service background.
  • Proven leadership skills to successfully deliver the line management responsibility for your cohort of experienced Syndicate Leads, with the ability and energy to build and lead the team effectively and to motivate and unlock best efforts from reports and colleagues.
  • The ability to play an active and constructive part of the Management Team at the Police Now Academy, working collaboratively with Syndicate Leads and Police Now HQ staff to ensure connectivity and a ‘one team’ culture where all can thrive.
  • Proven experience of operating and leading in a dynamic policing environment over an extended period; This includes being flexible and responding to changes at short notice and leading a team through such change.
  • The ability to speak clearly and in a compelling manner to large groups of people, including the delivery of briefings and instructions, receiving feedback from your team and the training officers, and delivering training inputs on areas that match your experience (curriculum support is provided).
  • Resilient with a positive mindset and good attention to detail, with the ability to operate with sound judgement in a high-pressure environment and the ability to work well with limited supervision (often for extended hours).
  • A commitment to and belief in Police Now’s mission, along with a commitment to equality, treating people fairly, promoting a positive and inclusive working environment and ensuring a diversity of people and views.
  • Willingness to be away from home during the delivery phases of residential academy training and/or events (approx. 13 weeks of residential academy, across 4 months)
  • Experience of training /coaching is desirable.
