Stipendiary Lectureship in Greek and Latin Language and Coordinator of the Classics Summer School

The College proposes to appoint a Stipendiary Lecturer in Greek and Latin Language from September 2026, based at Wadham, with effect from 1 September 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The lecturer will be required to give on average six hours per week of tutorials for Wadham College during the eight-week term, as well as taking an independent leadership role in designing and directing the Wadham Classics Summer School.

They are also expected to be available during both term and for some periods of the students’ vacations to offer organizational, pastoral, and admissions support. The College admits around nine undergraduates a year for Classical degrees; the majority of our Classics undergraduates are ab initio Greek and/or Latin language learners.

Key duties include arranging teaching, pastoral care of undergraduate students, setting and marking collections (termly college examinations), attending Tutorial Board meetings, taking part in the undergraduate admissions exercise and designing, leading and participating in Wadham’s Classics Summer School each August.

The post-holder will be expected to take primary responsibility for the teaching of the Greek and Latin languages in Wadham to undergraduates reading for degrees in Classics and associated joint schools. All students studying Greek and/or Latin receive tuition in the Faculty; this new role at Wadham is intended to develop and deliver further language support within college (particularly, but not only, for first- and second-year students). There may also be the opportunity for the post-holder to deliver some Greek and/or Latin literature tutorial teaching, if available teaching hours permit; but, as applications are encouraged from those from a variety of backgrounds, this is not an essential requirement for the role.

It is expected that the successful candidate will be an outstanding teacher of the Greek and Latin languages, with experience teaching both languages to advanced level in either a school or a university context. The successful applicant will be asked to provide proof of right to work in the UK before the post can be confirmed. Please note that the stipend offered for this post means that the College is not in a position to sponsor a Skilled Worker visa.

The stipend will be on a scale from £22,540 per annum, subject to revision in line with national adjustments to University teachers’ salaries. The position is superannuable under USS. The lecturer will be a member of the College’s Senior Common Room, will have shared use of a room for teaching, and will be entitled to eight meals a week, when the kitchens are open, free of charge. The lecturer will also be entitled to apply to research funds of up to £425 per annum.

Please see further particulars for duties of, and selection criteria, for the Post-holder.

Applications, consisting of a covering letter (detailing the candidate’s suitability for the post) and a curriculum vitae, should be emailed to tutorial@wadham.ox.ac.uk by noon on Monday 29th June. Applicants should ask two referees to e-mail references directly to tutorial@wadham.ox.ac.uk by the same date. It is likely that interviews for this position will be held during the week commencing 13th July.

Special arrangements

The College welcomes applications from candidates who have a disability. These documents will be made available in large print, audio, or other formats on request. Applicants invited for interview will be asked whether they require any particular arrangements to make the interview more convenient and effective for them.
