Brasenose College, in association with Worcester College, wishes to appoint a 10-hour Stipendiary Lecturer in Law from 1st October 2026 to 31st December 2026 to cover research leave. The Lecturer will also participate in student admissions and assist generally in the running of Law in collaboration with the Law tutors.

The salary will be within the range of £9,391 – £10,371 for the term, according to qualifications and experience. Note that this is a 0.33 Grade 5 appointment. Further particulars, including details of pension provision, allowances, and lunch and dining rights, are available here.

The closing date for applications is noon on Friday 22nd May. Any queries about the application process should be addressed to the Academic Registrar, Dr Bronwen Tomkinson, Brasenose College, Oxford, OX1 4AJ (academic.registrar@bnc.ox.ac.uk).

The Appointment

Applications are invited for a Stipendiary Lecturership in Law at Brasenose College and Worcester College, Oxford. The post is tenable from 1st October 2026 to 31st December 2026. This is a teaching-only post and the salary scale will be within the range of £9,391 – £10,371 for the term, plus allowances, according to qualifications and experience. Note that this is a 0.33 Grade 5 appointment. The appointee will have the option of becoming or remaining a member of the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS).

The salary range requires candidates to have the right to work in the UK since the salary will not meet the UKVI’s minimum threshold to enable a Skilled Worker Visa appointment. Since this is a teaching-only position, candidates must be available to start by the specified start date.

Brasenose College

Brasenose College is one of the older foundations in the University of Oxford. Across all years within the College, there are approximately 375 undergraduates and 250 graduates. The College’s senior members comprise the Principal, Fellows (45 of whom constitute the Governing Body), and College Lecturers. Brasenose’s paramount objective is the pursuit of academic excellence for the public benefit and is concerned to foster research as well as high-quality teaching. The College has a substantial library, mainly for undergraduate use, and well-developed IT provision. Further information about the College can be found at www.bnc.ox.ac.uk.

The College has a reputation for being open and friendly and we are keen to be inclusive, encouraging applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds. As a Stipendiary Lecturer, you will be welcomed into the Brasenose community, and, through our various events, and especially over lunch (which is very popular and well-attended), you will have the chance to interact with a broad range of other academics across many different disciplines. The appointment offers scope to become as involved in the social and intellectual life of the College as you wish. Throughout the year, there are also opportunities to invite guests – a hospitality allowance (detailed below) encourages academics to do this. Brasenose also seeks to be a family-friendly employer and wherever possible will consider a flexible approach to work.

The college has three tutorial fellows in law: Professor Thomas Krebs; Professor Adam Perry; and Professor William Swadling. The post is to cover the sabbatical leave of Professor Swadling. Professor Anne Davies is a professorial fellow of the college and Professor James Edwards is a college lecturer.

Brasenose admits approximately 10 students per year to study Law. The college also admits graduate students to study for the BCL, the MJur, the MPhil, and the DPhil in Law. Though there are no teaching duties for graduate students, there will be pastoral ones.

Worcester College

Worcester College occupies the site of Gloucester College, founded in 1283 for monks from the Abbey of St Peter, Gloucester. It was re-founded as Worcester College in 1714, following a benefaction by Sir Thomas Cookes, Bt, from Worcestershire. The original Benedictine site was large, and eighteenth- and nineteenth-century additions to it have resulted in the College occupying some twenty-six acres. The gardens were laid out to include a lake in the early nineteenth century, and the adjoining sports field was reclaimed from drained water meadows in the late nineteenth century. The mixture of architectural styles, set amongst landscaped, wooded gardens and grounds, make Worcester one of the most attractive colleges in Oxford. The Library is one of Worcester College’s finest assets. The modern reading rooms contain 65,000 volumes, while the magnificent Old Library houses collections of European importance. Worcester has a large separate Law Library, with holdings of some 7,000 volumes. The recent appointment of two Heads of Research is part of a wider commitment to fostering a lively and supportive research environment, and the provision of support and mentoring to early career researchers. The College supports a range of research activities including seminars, workshops, public lectures, round-table discussions, and interdisciplinary approaches to research and dissemination that address a public audience.

Worcester College admits up to eight undergraduate students each year to read for degrees in Law (Jurisprudence) and Law with Law Studies in Europe. The College employs three tutorial fellows in Law (Professor Donal Nolan, Dr James Edwards, and Dr Marco Cappelletti), three College Lecturers (Dr Menelaos Markakis, Professor William Swadling, and Pía Chible), and a Professorial Fellow of Taxation Law (Professor Tsilly Dagan.) The College also has a very active student-run Law Society, which organises moots (mock appeal cases), social events and careers talks, as well as a very successful annual dinner, to which all Worcester Law students, past and present, are invited. Links with the legal profession are strong, and the Law tutors are well placed to advise students who wish to pursue careers in legal practice, in academia, or in international organisations.

Duties

The person appointed will co-ordinate with the Law Fellows and Lecturers to teach around ten students per college in the undergraduate paper in Trusts. There will also be collection marking in Land Law at the start of term for both colleges.

A weighting system moderates the amount of contact time needed to fulfil the teaching obligation. For Tutorials given to one student, the weight is 1, for two students, it is 1.25, and for three students, it it is 1.5. As far as possible, tutorial teaching should be provided to pairs of students.

The Stipendiary Lecturer will work alongside other academic staff. They will be expected to play an active part in the life of the College, sharing in the general responsibilities towards Law teaching. They will undertake all the normal duties of an undergraduate tutor, including mentoring and pastoral oversight, writing references, writing termly reports, attending end of term collections, setting and marking College exams and providing feedback, and organising and attending relevant start of term meetings.

The undergraduate admissions duties associated with the post are: participation in College open days; communication with potential candidates if required; preparation for the annual admission process, including analysis of candidates, attendance of meetings, and participating in interviews.

The Colleges offer undergraduates the opportunity to give feedback on Tutorial and class teaching each year. The current system consists of termly individual electronic feedback.

Selection Criteria

The selection criteria for the post are:

  1. A high quality of education and training at first-degree and postgraduate level in the appropriate areas of Law (essential).
  2. Experience of teaching undergraduate papers in Land Law and Trusts. The CV and covering letter should provide full details of relevant teaching experience.
  3. Evidence of an ability and willingness to participate in the full range of pastoral, administrative and similar duties required in the post.
  4. Availability to start at the advertised start date since this post is covering a period of research leave.

Notice Period and Probation

The Stipendiary Lectureship is offered on a fixed term basis to cover the leave of Professor William Swadling. The appointment will end on 31st December 2026 unless the College, for operational reasons, ends it sooner. It should be noted that the expectation is that the entire period of the University Term of this Lectureship will be worked. Should exceptional circumstances arise, one month’s notice may be given by either party, or such longer notice as is required by statute. A letter of resignation should be addressed to the Senior Tutor of Brasenose.

The College reserves the right to end the employment without notice or payment in lieu of notice in cases of summary dismissal on grounds of gross misconduct.

Right to Work

To comply with UK employment legislation, the successful candidate will be required to provide documentary evidence of their right to work in the UK before taking up the post.

Allowances. The Stipendiary Lecturer will be entitled to five lunches or dinners per week free of charge at common table at Brasenose, when the College kitchens are open during Term and the vacations. Equal Opportunities Policy

The colleges of the University of Oxford are equal opportunities employers. They will work to remove any barriers, real or perceived, which might deter people of the highest quality from applying to the colleges as staff. Entry into employment and progression within employment will be determined only by personal merit and the application of criteria which are related to the duties of each particular post and the relevant salary structure. In all cases, ability to perform the job will be the primary consideration. Subject to statutory provisions, no applicant or member of staff will be treated less favourably than another because of their sex, gender reassignment, pregnancy or maternity leave, marital or civil partnership status, sexual orientation, religion or belief, racial group, age or disability.
