Exeter College is seeking to appoint a Stipendiary Lecturer in Classics. This is a fixed-term role, tenable from 1 October 2026 – 30 September 2027.

The Lecturer will be required to undertake 96 ‘contact’ hours of tutorial or class teaching of undergraduates for the college (or, by exchange, undergraduates of other colleges) during the period of the appointment. In addition, they will be required to set and mark college examinations, and to participate fully in the undergraduate Admissions process and Access/ Outreach activities, and in the running of Classics within the colleges.

The Lecturer must be able to give tutorials and revision classes on the following topics as a minimum:

  • Latin language (all levels, including unseen, prepared reading, and prose composition);
  • ‘Mods’ and ‘Prelims’ Latin texts (Seneca, Virgil, Catullus)
  • ‘Latin Core’ (Latin Literature of the late first century BC); and
  • Latin Didactic Poetry

The ability to teach additional papers would be an advantage, but is not essential.

The salary will be within the range of £16,905 – £18,669 per annum. In addition, a range of other generous benefits are available.
