Standard Rail Engineering Technician Apprenticeship (Level 3)
Team: Signalling & Telecommunications / Infrastructure Department.
Location: TBC.
Contract: Permanent 36.5 hours per week.
Salary: £15,184 per annum.
About the Role
This is a fantastic chance to earn while you learn and launch a career in rail engineering. Working alongside our experienced engineers and technicians, you will help to maintain, examine, repair and overhaul the railway’s signalling and telecommunication systems. Over approximately three years you will gain nationally recognised qualification and the practical skills to become a competent rail engineering technician – all while playing a hands-on part in preserving the nation’s railway heritage.
During this 3.5-year apprenticeship programme you will learn a range of engineering skills by working on and receiving workplace-based training. You will also receive formal training and be supported to obtain a nationally recognised qualification through our training provider Derwent Training, based in Malton, North Yorkshire.

What you will do

Assist with the planned maintenance, examination, overhaul and repair of signalling & Telecommunications, under supervision.

Learn to use hand tools, power tools, and some workshop equipment safely and correctly.

Carry out inspections, fault diagnosis and repairs as your skills develop.

Read and interpret engineering drawings, technical manuals, specifications and maintenance records.

Follow all safety, quality and environmental procedures at all times.

Keep accurate work and quality records and contribute to continuous improvement.

Build a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates your growing competence.
About You
Essential:
No previous experience is required, full training will be given. We are looking for someone who:
- Is genuinely enthusiastic about engineering and our railway heritage.
- Holds (or is working towards) the entry qualifications below – ideally GCSEs (or equivalent) including English, maths and a science or technology subject [adjust to suit your entry requirements].
- Is willing to work towards Level 2 English and maths if not already achieved.
- Can follow instructions, work safely and contribute as part of a team.
- Is reliable, hardworking, punctual and keen to learn.
- Is able to undertake physical, hands-on work in a workshop and outdoor environment.
