Role: Staff Writer
Reporting to the Magazine Group Editor, the Staff Writer will fulfil a key and varied role in the editorial team working on Materials World magazine and digital content. They will produce news pages in each print issue and contribute to the daily rota of digital news.
The post holder will also take responsibility for regular magazine sections, such as the events listings and books pages.
They will be expected to support the News Editor working on the Professional Development section of the magazine, maintaining our social media presence across X, Instagram and LinkedIn, as well as uploading magazine content to the website following print production.
The post holder will also contribute to pitching and developing profile pieces, event reports and other long form articles as required. Attendance at events and site visits for reporting are key features of the role.
There may also be an opportunity to contribute ideas for and support the production of podcasts.
Reporting to: Rupal Mehta, Magazine Group Editor
Duties will include, but are not limited to:
- Responsibility for certain regular sections of the magazine, including Events Listings and Books.
- Proactively search for stories and leads.
- Source and write incisive news stories, longer special reports, profile pieces and other long-form articles as required.
- Source high-quality images and liaise with the design team to generate visually appealing pages.
- Take responsibility for allocated pages through to the print production process.
- Proofread copy and check layouts for all magazine content, in print and online, alongside the rest of the team.
- Work closely with the News Editor to develop ideas for news and plan balanced content.
- Maintain the standard of content and meet editorial and production deadlines.
- Support the maintenance of the magazine's social media channels and upload content to the website as required.
- Participate in a weekly rota for digital news coverage.
- Administer the process for the book reviews pages.
- Attend events and represent the organisation, cultivating a network of contacts across industry and academia.
- Cover for team members when needed and assist with future projects undertaken by the editorial team.

The ideal candidate will be a confident, accurate journalist with an interest in science and materials, comfortable working to tight production deadlines.
- Experience working as a journalist — essential
- Confidence working with scientific material and an interest in science journalism and the topics we cover — essential
- Proven ability to write incisive, well-structured news and news features within a print magazine and/or online communications environment — essential
- A well-developed capability for interviews and reporting — essential
- Excellent command of the English language and grammar — essential
- Able to develop content and generate new story ideas — essential
- High attention to detail, strong proofreading and sub-editing skills — essential
- Ability to work to multiple tight deadlines, with accuracy under pressure — essential
- Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills — essential
- Commitment to precision and high standards in the production of allocated pages — essential
- Self-starter, enthusiastic and able to work on own initiative and as part of a small team — essential
