Step on set and learn how to capture professional TV sound while shadowing experienced audio teams.
Since producing the now legendary Brookside, Lime Pictures has gone on to deliver some of TV’s most iconic programmes. Our shows cover a wide range of genres from reality to scripted drama. For over 30 years we’ve pioneered new formats, using TV not only for on-screen storytelling but as an off-screen platform to reach younger audiences. Our shows have also won countless awards including the Double Daytime Emmy winning Free Rein for Netflix, Multi award winning Hollyoaks and of course, the BAFTA winning reality series The Only Way is Essex for ITV.
As a sound intern, you will spend the start of your internship shadowing and observing experienced boom operators and sounds mixers. You will then spend time with an experienced team on shoot to follow shoot cycles, learning set etiquette and receive training on the skills required to be a boom operator in TV. Our boom operators are responsible for capturing the best quality sound by operating sound equipment with efficiency to high technical standard, taking instruction and direction from the sound mixer. They ensure all sound equipment is rigged and de-rigged carefully.
Key activities
- Learning how to operate the boom pole and microphone to capture the best quality sound
- Learning how to manage and allocate radio frequencies for a variety of wireless equipment
- Fitting microphones to actors
- Assisting with rigging and de-rigging equipment
What you'll learn
During the internship you will learn how to operate the boom pole, microphone and all the skills required to capture the best quality sound. You will learn about process, audio or video workflows, rigging and prepping equipment, all in a supervised environment. You will develop an understanding of Health and Safety pertaining to the role whilst being hands on with their respective teams. You will also have the opportunity to spend some time with the sound mixers. By the end of the internship, you should be ready to apply for boom operator positions within the industry.
What we are looking for
- Technically minded, with an interest in microphone types and placement, and sound recording equipment
- A keen interest in TV production and evolving audio technology
