VOLUNTEER ROLE DESCRIPTION SIGNALMAN START YOUR VOLUNTEER JOURNEY Volunteers are the beating heart and soul of our much-loved living museum. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway offers a wide range of experiences for those who love history, trains, and a unique experience. Volunteering presents you with the opportunity to meet new people from all walks of life. You’ll gain worthwhile skills, and this can result in a real sense of achievement. Around 1000 volunteers work in various roles across the NYMR and they all bring something unique with them. Signallers, and 1:1 assessments to review your progress. In addition, you will be required to complete a written correspondence course of nine units which allow you to become familiar with the rules and regulations. Successful completion, as well as a final written rules examination and a full day practical box examination, will see you pass as a qualified Signaller on the NYMR. We will ensure that you receive appropriate support and advice throughout. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ROSTER: This is a rostered role where you will be able to confirm your availability in advance. WHERE YOU VOLUNTEER: New Bridge (1 mile north of Pickering) Levisham (YO18 7NN) Goathland Station (YO22 5NF) Grosmont Station (YO22 5QE) Where you begin your volunteer journey may depend on where training places are available. Trainee Signallers will not usually be able to begin training at Grosmont. TIME COMMITMENT: We would be looking for a long-term commitment. A turn lasts for up to 9 hours and we would expect a minimum on average of at least two turns per month. We operate seven days a week normally between April and October. Special Events also operate outside these times. UNIFORM & EQUIPMENT: A name badge and tie/scarf will be provided, along with high vis waistcoat. It is a highly responsible role, and you will need to maintain safety standards at all times, not only when services are running normally but when there is disruption too. WHAT’S INVOLVED? • being a focal point of railway operations • having control of a section of railway • being part of the team who enable train services to run each day • interacting with drivers, guards, duty controller, and others • keep accurate records of events • maintain attention during quieter periods DESIRABLE SKILLS • excellent communication skills • a strong sense of responsibility • conscientious with a positive attitude towards rules and procedures • ability to work under pressure and make decisions in a timely manner • good concentration and the ability to anticipate risk • awareness of our visitors – whilst duties are not public facing, you’ll be a big part of the railway and occasionally need to assist visitors and answer questions This is a safety critical role and subject to a formal medical with the railway doctor. TRAINING All training will be provided to support you in this role, including Personal Track Safety. You will undertake taught classroom sessions, regular training turns in the signal box with experienced
