The UWC short course Thinking Narratives explores how dominant narratives and value systems shape how we live, relate to one another, and understand ourselves and the world. The course invites participants to examine the ways in which narratives are adopted and imposed, perpetuated and reinforced, and how they shape both how we think and how we are understood.

Through slow conversation, reflection, and dialogue, participants are encouraged to question assumptions, build strong emotional connections, and experiment with creating their own narratives using insights gained through the learning process. The course aims to support all involved in developing a greater capacity to hold paradox, contradiction, and ambiguity in a world that often resists simple resolution.

Thinking Narratives UWC short course is seeking an experienced facilitator.

Facilitators contribute to the development and conceptualisation of the course programme and to the organisational and logistical preparation of the course. This includes responsibilities such as co-developing and leading workshops, supporting publicity where appropriate, and contributing to course evaluation and impact measurement.

During the course, facilitators support the overall participant experience by meeting with participants regularly, contributing to community building, and organising informal community events. Facilitators also share responsibility for the residential life of the programme, including supporting participant wellbeing, maintaining clear boundaries, and ensuring agreed routines such as participants being in their dormitories at the designated time. In addition, each facilitator leads a small, consistent reflective group throughout the programme.

Eligibility

  • Applicants should be above the age of 18 at the time of the course.
  • Course language: English

Workload

Facilitators commit to be part of the whole short course, plus two days of preparation and one day of evaluation or wrap-up. Additionally, facilitators are expected to dedicate time to preparation of the course, such as designing workshops, and to be available for frequent Zoom calls with the team, weekly or fortnightly. Notion will be used for project management, and experience with this tool is helpful.

The preparation workload is approximately two hours per week, increasing to around five hours per week in the weeks leading up to the course. During the course, facilitators are expected to be actively present throughout the daily programme from 08:00 to 22:00. Time off is built into the schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Working in diverse teams & with youth
  • Teaching & facilitation
  • Enforcing rules & policies
  • Conflict Resolution
  • We do not expect you to have in-depth experience in each of these areas, but these should be aspects you are willing to work on.
