9Applications are invited for the full time post within Digital Infrastructure, part of the Directorate of Estates and Digital Infrastructure as a Senior Windows Engineer.

We are looking for a highly skilled Senior Windows Endpoint Engineer to work within the Digital Infrastructure team. This role holder will work alongside the wider End User Device team and Head of Digital Infrastructure to continue to improve and modernise our Edge technology services. The role holder will also support the Digital Infrastructure team with complex technical issues.

Candidates should be educated to postgraduate degree level (or equivalent) in a relevant STEM subject area or possess equivalent relevant professional experience in a related field. Candidates should have previous experience in a large enterprise environment supporting over two thousand Windows desktops/laptops using Microsoft Intune and the wider Office 365 and Entra environments.

The successful candidate will be expected to commence as soon as possible.

The ability to communicate in Welsh is desirable for this post.

The post is permanent and full-time and benefits from being eligible to the nationally supported USS pension scheme and various other employee benefit schemes.

This role will be located on campus at Bangor. Through our Dynamic Working framework, there will also be the option to spend some time working remotely (although remaining in the UK) to support work life balance, which will be discussed further with candidates at interview.

Overview

Digital Infrastructure is responsible for providing, developing and maintaining IT facilities and services across the University and technically supporting staff and students to use those facilities and services. Digital Infrastructure has a good reputation within the University, providing reliable and resilient infrastructure, services, applications and facilities. We pride ourselves on being helpful, friendly, and responsive to user needs. Digital Infrastructure sits within the Directorate of Estates and Digital Infrastructure, comprising of 5 distinct areas and 100 staff.

Purpose of the Job

To provide a high level of knowledge in Microsoft Intune and related Office 365 and Entra systems to manage the Windows desktop and mobile estate. This role will include co-ordination with the Edge Device Team leader to manage the annual update cycles of operating system and software for the 1000 PC open access estate. The role holder will need to proactively build relationships with teams across the Directorate and wider university, especially with the support teams, End User Technology teams and Digital security teams.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead service improvements and participate in projects by analysing requirements and delivering innovative solutions, co-ordinating with contractors, vendor, the wider HE sector and consultants as required.
  • Assess any security risks on endpoints working alongside the contracted SIEM / SoC provider and Security teams to remediate and resolve identified issues.
  • Lead improvements in endpoint health reporting within Intune.
  • Lead on developments in the delivery of Windows security updates
  • Maintain and updaate system documentation, offering guidance to colleagues across the university.
  • Provide specialist and high-level technical advice, direction and input in the delivery of an effective and high-quality end user device provision.
  • Work with the Security and wider Digital Infrastructure teams to enable renewal of cyber-essentials across the University estate.
  • Support and develop the usage of additional security tools including Bitlocker, WindowsHello for Business, and LAPS.
  • Support the End Device team with application packaging and deployment.
  • Participation in projects across the wider directorate to assist with the provision of a high quality, secure end device service.
  • Work with the Head of Infrastructure, End User technology Manager, and Edge Device team leader to assess and evaluate potential suppliers and partners.
  • Respond to support requests from technical colleagues and the wider university following the principles of ITIL.
  • Keep technical knowledge current engaging with professional development opportunities, user groups and conferences.
  • Assist with the routine update and configuration of Windows licence servers.
  • Other duties as require in line with role scope and experience.

Person Specification

Qualifications/Training   

Essential 

  • Degree in a relevant STEM subject area or possess equivalent professional experience in a related field.
  • Significant proven experience of delivering improvements with Microsoft Intune and End User device service.
  • Membership of appropriate professional bodies.

Desirable 

  • Other relevant IT or AV qualifications.
  • Microsoft Intune or Windows Configuration Certification .
  • Postgraduate degree in a relevant STEM subject area.
  • Full UK driving license.

Experience/Knowledge   

Essential 

  • Current Microsoft Windows enterprise device deployment, reporting and operations experience within a Microsoft M365 environment, developing Intune and Autopilot configurations.
  • Experienced in creating custom Microsoft Windows images.
  • Experience in reporting client health and vulnerabilities using Microsoft Intune.
  • Experience of working with centralised Endpoint Management tools including Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager, Intune, Active Directory and Group Policies.
  • Demonstrate strong logical diagnostic skills to troubleshoot and resolve complex issues.
  • Experience in application packaging and deployment through Microsoft Intune.
  • Experience of using scripting languages, such as Microsoft Powershell, to automate administrative tasks within Windows environment.

Desirable 

  • Experience working in Higher Education/Further Education/the public sector.
  • Experience with a Windows hybrid-joined environment secured by .1x.
  • Experience operating in a more secured Windows environment, such as Microsoft Hello and conditional access.
  • Familiarity with additional enterprise solutions such as Jamf, Sophos, Altiris or SCCM
  • Experience of developing, deploying and managing a VDI environment.
  • Experience of computer procurement, budgeting and working with national frameworks
