The Fundraising & Retail team is responsible for raising income to deliver the global charitable work of Mothers’ Union. We support Britain and Ireland diocese members in their fundraising efforts both in their local area and in support of our global work. We work collaboratively with the Membership and Communications departments to reach new audiences and potential supporters and members to help grow our movement as we enter a new strategic period.

It’s an exciting time to join the fundraising team as we celebrate our 150th year and embed new processes, supporter journeys and ways of working to support our longer-term growth.

Role Purpose 

The Senior Public Fundraising Manager will lead the planning and implementation of the public fundraising programme at Mothers’ Union. Together with the Associate Director of Fundraising you will set the strategic direction and budget needed to deliver sustainable growth. Public Fundraising currently includes a cash appeal, digital and community fundraising programme that largely serves our existing membership. With the support of the Fundraising Officer, this role will lead the introduction of a new test and learn supporter acquisition and development approach, optimise fundraising from our existing membership base and develop our legacy and in memory promotion and stewardship to help better realise potential in this area.

 
The Role 

As Senior Public Fundraising Manager you will:

  • Lead the planning and implementation of a multichannel public fundraising programme
  • Grow long term income from new supporter audiences using a mix of direct marketing channels
  • Optimise in year fundraising contribution of our existing member and supporter base through individual giving, community fundraising, legacy and in memory.
  • Create a programme of work that encourages innovation through a test and learn approach with the objective of future proofing income.
  • Bring a supporter-led approach to using data and insight, enhancing customer experience and driving long-term supporter engagement focus on lifetime value
  • Line manage the Individual Giving Officer (and potentially a new fixed term PT Fundraising and Supporter Care Officer from late 2026) providing a supportive work environment that fosters high performance and personal development.
  • Lead responsibility for design and production of all fundraising appeals and campaigns, working with colleagues in communication team and external suppliers.
  • Work with the Associate Director of Fundraising and Director of Membership to create and deliver an integrated regular giving supporter and membership programme including developing strategies for upgrade, conversion and retention
  • Develop engaging supporter materials that demonstrate the impact of our support
  • Lead on the development and growth of the existing legacy and in memory programme
  • Ensure thorough application and understanding of Microsoft Dynamics database and use it as an informed reporting tool.
  • Oversee efficient fulfilment of supporter care operations for all fundraising activity with support of Fundraising and Supporter Care Officer, helping to embed smooth inter team processes that optimise supporter experience,
  • Ensure all work and communications are in line with GDPR requirements and Mothers’ Union policies.
  • Stay up to date with changes in the regulatory environment and ensure the correct guidance is followed and implemented.

Person Specification 

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Experience in successful strategic planning, management and implementation of strategy as well as budget setting for multi-product programmes of activity
  • Extensive expertise in all aspects of individual giving, including new supporter acquisition across a variety of channels
  • Proven ability in growing multi-channel fundraising campaigns, with demonstrable experience of digital fundraising and developing multi-channel supporter journeys
  • Experience of growing legacy and in memory strategies and programmes of activity
  • Desirable experience of community fundraising and strong supporter stewardship to enhance fundraising and income generation
  • Experience using Microsoft Dynamics or similar CRM database to deliver targeted fundraising activity as well as performance reporting and supporter segmentation and analysis
  • Experience working in a global charity structure with local and national governance and/or membership organisation is desirable – or a demonstrative understanding of the considerations this has for fundraising
  • Up to date knowledge of charity law and fundraising regulation and codes of practice, relevant to the role
  • Line management experience with proven ability to oversee performance, set objectives and professional development of line reports.

  • Excellent research, writing, proof reading and copy-editing skills
  • Substantial financial management skills with previous experience of managing budgets, developing multiyear budgets and plans

Work Location/Hybrid Working Pattern 

Standard working hours are 35 hours a week, 7 hours a day from 9am until 5pm, which includes an unpaid lunch break of an hour.

We have embraced the benefits of working from home and at the same time, we value the contribution of face-to-face contact in building teamwork, collaborating with your colleagues, exchanging ideas and know-how, and for work efficiency.

We therefore operate a hybrid working policy, where staff can work from home if they wish, however everyone is required to work in the office an aggregate minimum of 90 days per calendar year (roughly 2 days a week) with Tuesdays as the core day for regular whole team meetings. Thursday is also a core working day for part time workers.
