About the role

This is a senior and influential role within the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) Examinations Directorate, with responsibility for leading and strengthening equity, accessibility and inclusive practice across the MRCGP examination. The MRCGP is a high-stakes licensing assessment taken by doctors seeking entry to the GMC GP Register. Ensuring that it is fair, accessible, and legally compliant is central to maintaining professional and public confidence.

As Senior Manager, Equity & Accessibility, you will provide strategic and operational leadership across reasonable adjustments, inclusive assessment practice, and equality governance within examinations. While reasonable adjustments form a core part of the remit, the role extends beyond case management to encompass policy development, quality assurance, data analysis, risk management, and continuous improvement in equitable assessment delivery.

You will work closely with the Head of Candidate Engagement, Clinical Leads, and senior colleagues across the College to ensure that examination processes:

  • Are compliant with the Equality Act (2010) and GMC requirements
  • Reflect best practice in inclusive assessment
  • Are robust, consistent, and defensible under scrutiny
  • Use data and insight to identify and address risks of differential impact

This is a role for a confident leader who can combine regulatory understanding, operational management and strategic insight to strengthen fairness and accessibility across a complex, high-profile assessment system.

What you will be responsible for

You will lead the College’s approach to reasonable adjustments in examinations by:

  • Providing senior oversight and governance of reasonable adjustment decision-making across all MRCGP examinations
  • Ensuring decisions are clinically appropriate, fair, consistent, and compliant with the Equality Act 2010, GMC requirements, and College policy
  • Line managing and supporting a specialist Reasonable Adjustments team, overseeing day-to-day delivery, communications, and casework
  • Acting as the Examinations Department’s senior expert on equity, accessibility, and fair access to assessment
  • Overseeing complex or high-risk cases and ensuring policies and decision-making frameworks are applied consistently across examination diets and formats
  • Leading the development, review, and maintenance of reasonable adjustment guidance, informed by data and evidence
  • Completing and reviewing Equality Impact Assessments (EIAs) related to examinations
  • Using data and insight to identify and address risks of differential impact or disadvantage
  • Designing and embedding quality assurance processes to improve transparency, consistency, and service quality
  • Ensuring accurate, auditable records are maintained
  • Representing the College externally with regulators, professional bodies, and expert groups when required
  • Preparing clear reports for senior leaders on trends, risks, and outcomes

Working relationships

You will report operationally to the Head of Candidate Engagement and work closely with:

  • Clinical Leads for Reasonable Adjustments
  • The RCGP ED&I Manager
  • Senior colleagues across Examinations and Candidate Engagement

What we are looking for

Essential experience and skills

  • Degree-level education or equivalent experience
  • Senior administrative or managerial experience within examinations, assessment, regulation, or a comparable environment
  • Experience supporting or delivering high-stakes assessments or other complex, high-impact operations
  • Strong understanding of working within regulatory or governance frameworks
  • Experience managing complex or sensitive cases and exercising sound professional judgement
  • Proven ability to lead and support teams at manager or senior manager level
  • Confidence working autonomously, managing competing priorities, and communicating clearly with senior stakeholders
  • Experience preparing high-quality reports, papers, and correspondence
  • Experience managing budgets or resources

Desirable experience

  • Experience of reasonable adjustment decision-making or disability advisory work
  • Knowledge of postgraduate medical assessment or regulatory scrutiny
  • Experience working in medical education, professional assessment, or a regulatory environment
  • Familiarity with GMC expectations around fairness, equality, and assessment
  • A relevant qualification in management, education, HR, or healthcare management

Who this role may suit

This role may particularly suit someone with strong credibility in assessment or regulation who is motivated by equity, accessibility, and inclusive practice, and who enjoys balancing fairness, governance, and practical delivery.
