We are looking for an experienced and passionate SEND Mediator to join our award-winning Mediation and Disagreement Resolution Service.

Our service supports families of children and young people aged 0–25 with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) to resolve disputes with Local Authorities and health services in a constructive, solution-focused way. Operating independently of Local Authorities, we ensure full impartiality and neutrality in every case.

As one of the UK’s most experienced mediation providers, delivering services across more than 30 Local Authorities in England, we are committed to professionalism, confidentiality, and achieving the best possible outcomes for children and young people.

If you are committed to inclusion, skilled in conflict resolution, and motivated by making a meaningful difference to families navigating the SEND system, we would love to hear from you.

The Role

As a SEND Mediator, you will:

  • Deliver high-quality mediation and disagreement resolution services to children, young people, families, Local Authorities and commissioning bodies
  • Facilitate structured, solution-focused discussions as an alternative to Tribunal proceedings
  • Promote early resolution and reduce the number of SEND appeals progressing to hearing
  • Ensure the voice of the child or young person is heard and appropriately represented
  • Manage your own caseload effectively, maintaining accurate and GDPR-compliant records
  • Prepare clear written summaries, agreements and outcome reports
  • Provide impartial, confidential and accessible advice and guidance to all parties
  • Build strong working relationships with Local Authorities, SEND teams, schools and other stakeholders
  • Monitor mediation outcomes to identify themes and inform service improvement
  • Contribute to service development, quality assurance and continuous improvement
  • Promote awareness of mediation services to families and professionals
  • Work in line with safeguarding procedures and organisational policies
  • Participate in supervision, peer review and ongoing professional development

This is a largely remote role, with occasional travel required for service meetings and in-person mediation where appropriate.

About You

Essential

  • Approved Foundations of Mediation Accreditation
  • Willingness to complete SEND Mediator Accreditation (if not already achieved) in line with Civil Mediation Council and College of Mediators professional standards
  • Strong knowledge of SEND legislation, including the Children and Families Act 2014 and SEND Code of Practice
  • Experience working with children, young people and families, particularly those with SEND
  • Excellent communication, listening and facilitation skills
  • Ability to remain impartial, calm and professional in emotionally charged situations
  • Experience managing casework independently and meeting deadlines
  • Strong commitment to inclusion, equality and positive outcomes for children and families
  • Understanding of safeguarding responsibilities
  • Competence in record-keeping, report writing and case management systems

Desirable

  • SEND Mediator Accreditation
  • Registration on the Civil Mediation Council/College of Mediators joint SEND Register
  • Experience working within Local Authorities, education, health or social care systems
  • Knowledge of Tribunal processes and pre- or post-appeal support
  • Experience delivering online/virtual mediation
  • Experience contributing to service development or quality improvement

Personal Attributes

You will be:

  • Empathetic, approachable and respectful
  • Highly organised and self-motivated
  • Resilient, with the ability to manage complex and sensitive cases
  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Committed to reflective practice and ongoing professional development

Why Join Us?

  • Be part of an independent, highly respected and award-winning service
  • Play a key role in reducing conflict and stress for families
  • Help rebuild professional relationships and support better long-term outcomes
  • Benefit from flexible working arrangements
  • Contribute to meaningful service development and quality improvement
