Job Title: School Health & Safety and Compliance Manager Reporting to: Director of Finance and Operations (Clayesmore) and ILG Health and Safety Manager (Head Office) ___________________________________________________________________________ Role Overview The Health and Safety Compliance Manager will be based at Clayesmore School and is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of health, safety, and statutory compliance across the School for 30 hours per week. The role ensures that the School provides a safe working and learning environment for staff, pupils, visitors, and contractors, and that it meets all legal and regulatory obligations relating to health, safety, and welfare at work. Working closely with the Director of Finance and Operations, the Head of Estates and Operations, and Head Office, the Health & Safety and Compliance Manager will develop, implement, monitor, and continuously improve health and safety policies, systems, and procedures. The postholder will act as the School’s expert on compliance, providing assurance to senior leadership, the Board, and external stakeholders through robust reporting, audits, and inspections. The role requires a proactive and detail-oriented professional who can influence others, embed a positive health and safety culture, and ensure that compliance is integrated into everyday operations across the School. For the remaining time, the Health and Safety Compliance Manager is responsible for the maintaining of Health and Safety compliance in conjunction with the Health and Safety Manager (ILG) for the schools in the South Area. Responsibilities and Duties • Ensure a safe workplace environment without risk to health. • Ensure that all Health and Safety policies, procedures, rules and regulations are adhered to and are regularly reviewed, updated and communicated. • Ensure the School meets its statutory obligations in all areas pertaining to health, safety and welfare at work, including statutory training and reporting. • At all times, ensure that the school is compliance ready for inspections from ISI, Ofsted or other external bodies such as Environmental Health Officers, participating in the visits/inspections when required. • Maintenance of the school’s Risk Register • Management of the school’s data protection registration with the Information Commissioners Office • Processing Data Subject Access Requests on behalf of the school, liaising with the necessary staff in school and at head office as appropriate • Support the Head of Estates and Operations in ensuring that all contractors working on-site comply with all statutory health and safety requirements. • Ensure the completion and regular review of risk assessments for all work equipment and operations. • Ensure that all accidents are documented, investigated and recommended improvements implemented. To include ensuring incidents are reported as RIDDOR where applicable • Ensure that safety inspections are carried out, fire drills are conducted and fire alarms are correctly tested, safety inspections, risk assessments and lone working procedures are managed and employees are aware of their responsibilities. • In conjunction with head office, co-ordinate the development of health and safety policies, systems of work and procedures. • Establish a full programme of documented health and safety inspections, audits and checks. • In conjunction with head office, establish a structured programme of health and safety training throughout the school, ensuring full and accurate health and safety and training records are maintained. • Liaise with external health and safety training and safety services providers where necessary • Chair the Health and Safety Committee meetings including circulating the agenda, the writing of and distribution of minutes. Ensure that all agreed action points are completed within deadlines • Compile the termly Health and Safety report for head office • Keep up to date with all aspects of relevant health, safety and welfare at work legislation and communicate relevant changes to the school where necessary. • Provide regular reports to head office and the Board on relevant health and safety activities. • Participate in meetings when required to report on relevant health and safety matters. • Liaise with suppliers as appropriate. Person Specification Essential • To live out the values of Clayesmore, demonstrating loyalty to the school and its ethos • A recognised health and safety qualification such as IOSH or NEBOSH • Proven experience in a compliance or health and safety management role • Experience of interpreting and applying health and safety legislation • • Experience of developing, reviewing and implementing health and safety procedures • Ability to conduct risk assessments, inspections, audits and investigations, and implement Strong working knowledge of health, safety and compliance legislation and best practice corrective actions with a pragmatic approach • Experience of maintaining accurate compliance and training records • Good organisational and time management skills Flexible approach to work and tasks required • • Tact, discretion and diplomacy with proven experience of using initiative and being proactive Desirable • Experience of working within an educational or similarly regulated environment • Experience of ISI and Ofsted regulations Strong commitment to fostering a positive health and safety culture • • Understanding of governance and reporting requirements at Board level Additional Information ● This is an all year round role, working 40 contractual hours per week, Monday to Friday with a one hour unpaid break each day. ● Holiday entitlement will be 22 days per year (1 January - 31 December), plus 8 Bank Holidays. You may be required to work any public holiday when the school is open, for which time off will be given.
