Job Description: School Chef

Status and hours: 35 hours per week (0700-1430, Monday – Friday). This is a full year post and not restricted to term time.

Responsible to: Head School Chefs

A. Ethos

To make an effective contribution towards meeting the aims of Hamilton College.

B. Job Purpose

To support the provision of nutritious, well-presented meals to pupils and staff in a safe, clean, and welcoming environment, contributing to the smooth running of the school’s catering service. To assist in the preparation, cooking, and serving of meals to pupils and staff, ensuring high standards of hygiene, safety, and food quality are maintained at all times.

C. Key Responsibilities

  1. Assist in the preparation and cooking of meals in accordance with the school’s menu and dietary requirements.

  2. Ensure the dietary needs and allergen requirements of learners, staff, parents and guests are consistently met. This includes:

a. Accurately identifying and preparing meals for individuals with specific dietary restrictions or allergies.

b. Communicating clearly with the catering team, school staff, and parents to ensure safe food handling and service.

c. Ensuring allergen signage and labelling are clear and compliant with school and legal standards.

d. Participating in relevant training and staying informed about food safety regulations and best practices.

  1. Maintain cleanliness and hygiene in all food preparation and serving areas.

  2. Ensure compliance with food safety regulations and school policies.

  3. Assist with stock control, deliveries, and storage of food items.

  4. Support the Head School Chef in planning menus and managing kitchen operations.

  5. Serve all learners, staff, parents and guests in a friendly and professional manner.

  6. Participate in cleaning duties including washing up, kitchen equipment, and surfaces.

  7. Report any maintenance or safety issues promptly.

10.Set up and clear down the dining area before and after meal service.

11.Follow food safety and hygiene regulations at all times.

12.Support themed meal days and school events as required.

13.Support the school with events in evenings and weekends as required.

14.Report any concerns regarding food safety, equipment, or pupil welfare to the Head School Chefs.

D. Specific Objective for Service Delivery

Health and safety

  1. The School Chef must follow all Hamilton College health and safety policies, procedures and any additional health and safety instructions as required by the Head School Chefs.

  2. The School Chef must support the Head School Chefs to ensure that all safety at work procedures are followed.

Departmental and College Profiles

  1. To promote a positive, high profile for the departments and College with learners, staff, the Staff Council, parents, other schools, key support agencies and the public.

Professional Review

  1. To undertake a programme of professional development (PRD) as agreed with Head School Chefs.

Resources

  1. To make efficient and effective use of the accommodation, resources and facilities in the Catering area.

  1. To adhere to GDPR and Data Protection Regulations, whilst maintaining confidentiality.
