The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) is a defence and security think tank that has a deep understanding of regional geopolitics and geo-economics in a global context. Its international researchers provide best-in-class independent and impartial analysis and provide insights on strategic challenges and priorities to governments and the private sector. It is expert at bringing together national leaders and senior policymakers in foreign policy, defence and security; promoting dialogue; and facilitating effective and influential bilateral and multilateral consultations.

The IISS is looking to recruit a Research Fellow for Missile Technologies and UAVs to work in the IISS Defence and Military Analysis Programme (DMAP). The successful candidate will conduct research and fundraise in areas of specialisation and work with colleagues including on the IISS Missile Dialogue Initiative.

  • Conduct in-depth analysis and original research on UAVs, concerning technical developments, employment, policy and industrial considerations. Assessment of debates and technical considerations relating to automation and autonomy, and emerging considerations relating to the technical capability and employment of Collaborative Combat Aircraft. Develop, fundraise and deliver research in this area.
  • Conduct in-depth analysis and original research on missile technologies, including technical parameters, development trajectories and military, defence policy and industrial considerations. Develop, fundraise and deliver research in this area.
  • Support the delivery of the IISS Missile Dialogue Initiative, including research, analysis and writing tasks, and maintain a wider interest in defence aerospace.
  • Contributions to The Military Balance+database,The Military Balanceand other IISS publications, and deliver corporate and media briefings.
  • Contributions to IISS Dialogues, conferences, workshops and other events as required.
  • Management and mentoring of junior research colleagues, as required.
  • Demonstrable experience in the analysis of missile and/or UAV technologies and related capability assessments.
  • A master’s degree or post-graduate research specialisation in a defence aerospace-relevant area, preferably with a technology focus. Alternatively, a relevant professional background and experience in the defence industry, the armed forces or defence intelligence may be considered.
  • A high level of competence in data management and research tools.
  • Proven experience in policy-relevant research and publication on missile and UAV technologies.
  • Proven experience in conceptualising and leading relevant projects, including accurate and timely delivery of findings to a wide range of audiences.
  • Excellent command of spoken and written English. Additional language skills are highly desirable.
