Oxley Sports Centre is located on the western edge of the historic and beautiful Abbey town of Sherborne
and has excellent first-rate facilities. Our modern and spacious Fitness suite was refurbished in 2022. We
also have 25m swimming pool, a sports hall, climbing wall, spin zone, squash courts, tennis courts, a
treatment room and the Coffee Pod.
Sherborne Sports and Leisure Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sherborne Girls School. SSLL is responsible
for the operation of Oxley Sports Centre.

Recreation Assistant

Recreation Assistants are an essential part of the operation of our Centre.
This is a responsible role which is key to the safety and well-being of our
customers; it requires excellent attention to detail and exceptional people
skills.    You  will  be  flexible  to  work  across  a  7  day  week  rota  including
evenings and weekends.
Senior Recreation Assistant

Main duties

•  Assist in the day-to-day operation of the running of the sports
centre, ensuring that all health and safety legislation codes of
practice and operating procedures are complied with at all times

•  To ensure that all loose equipment is erected and dismantled on
time  in  accordance  with  recommendations  and  code  of  practice
and used correctly by members and visitors at all times.

•  To  actively  sell  the  benefits  of  regular  exercise  and  health
promotion  to  the  lifestyles  of  all  members  and  prospective
members.

•  To constantly supervise the swimming pool (when on pool duty) to
ensure the safety and welfare of all users in accordance with the
company’s operating procedures.

•  Maintain cleanliness and hygiene standards throughout the centre
including the swimming pool, changing areas, sports hall, squash
courts and astro turf.

•  To co-operate with the Management team in all issues of health
and safety under the provisions within the Health & Safety At
Work Act 1974, the Company Health & Safety Policy, Operating
Procedures and any other subsequent and/or relevant legislation

•  To gain, hold and keep valid the National Pool Lifeguard and first
aid  qualification.  Attendance  to  staff  training  is  requisite  to
ensuring validity of your qualification.

•  To attend programmed staff meetings and training as required by

the Manager

•  To actively promote the name of SSLL, Oxley Sports Centre
and Sherborne Girls (SG) in all transactions with members
and visitors.

Qualifications and
Experience

Hold a National Pool Lifeguard Qualification –
courses available at the centre.

Skills and Abilities

GCSE or equivalent Maths and English.
Must be a confident and able swimmer.

Industry recognised qualification
(STA Swim Teacher, Fitness
Instructor level 2, First Aid at
Work)

The ability to communicate effectively.

Personal Attributes

Have a keen interest in the Fitness industry.

The ability to work as part of a team.

Additional Information

Hours of work: An average of 36 hours per week on a shift basis.

Salary: £12.21ph

Pre-employment checks and Probation:
The successful applicants’ appointment will be subject to successful completion of a probationary period and full
pre-employment checks. Sherborne Girls will conduct online searches for shortlisted candidates.  This check will
be undertaken based on the requirements set out in Keeping Children Safe in Education 2022.  The check will
help us to ensure safe and robust checks on the suitability of individuals to work within our School. To minimise

unconscious bias or potential discrimination issues, a person who will not be on the appointment panel will
conduct the search and will only share information if and when findings are of concern. A panel may explore any
concerns passed to them as part of our due diligence process.
