Job description
Job Purpose
To support the planning and delivery of the NIHR evaluation of welfare grants in pregnancy and the early years across the UK. This research project examines the impacts of welfare grants in pregnancy and the early years on maternal and child health inequalities. The post holder will work with Professor Ruth Dundas and Dr Anna Pearce, and other colleagues both within University of Glasgow and other Universities across the UK. This is a complex mixed-methods project that uses a wide range of cross-UK administrative health records to estimate the impact of the welfare grants on maternal and child health and health inequalities, using natural experimental evaluation methods; as well as extensive interviews with families, stakeholders from a range of sectors and those with lived experience of parenthood and welfare grants.
The successful candidate will be expected to project manage and support the direction of this complex and challenging project based within the Department of Public Health in the School of Health and Wellbeing. The postholder also be expected to support other studies as required.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Liaise with lead researchers and project staff to plan and run all aspects of the project efficiently and effectively.
2. Provide day to day co-ordination of the project including coordinating communications, coordinating training, data access, managing data, monitoring deadlines and budgets and providing the Principal Investigator with detailed project status reports, including progress against agreed milestones highlighting significant project risks and changes.
3. To ensure that all appropriate project tracking and filing systems are up to date and accurate ensuring that study protocol and contractual requirements are met appropriately and in a timely fashion.
4. Establish and maintain effective communication with other departments within the University and external partners. Take responsibility for communicating best project management practice and ensuring effective communication between project teams across the different collaborating institutions.
5. Maintain clear documentation of the study processes and ensure the study operates according to protocols and maintains a consistently high level of performance in accordance with these, as well as providing a highly effective and responsive approach to problem resolution.
6. Contribute to developing and implementing appropriate project management methodologies (including study specific SOPs) and quality systems.
7. Survey the research literature and environment, understand the research challenges associated with the project & subject area, and develop/implement a suitable project management strategy.
8. Prepare reports for external funding bodies, ethics committees, and project management meetings as appropriate
9. Identify and coordinate knowledge exchange activities, including stakeholder engagement, online outputs and other avenues of dissemination
10. Secure ethical and relevant governance approvals for studies and ensure compliance with UK legal and regulatory requirements in respect of equality and diversity, data protection, copyright and licensing, security, financial and other University policies, procedures and codes as appropriate.
11. Support the identification of potential funding sources and assist in the development of proposals to secure funding from internal and external bodies to support future research.
12. Supervise, mentor and train less experienced members of the project team to ensure their effective development.
13. Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field/discipline and engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.
14. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Principal Investigators and/or the Head of SHW.
15. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, World Changers Together.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge & Qualifications
Essential:
A1. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9, [Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4], or equivalent in a relevant discipline/business area with evidence of continued professional development in an area relevant to the role
Desirable
B1. Postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline/business area
Skills
Essential:
C1. Significant project or trial management knowledge and skills.
C2. Knowledge of social, public health, or medical research
C3. Knowledge of the regulatory framework which governs research
C4. Excellent communication skills [oral and written], including public presentations
C5. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to develop networks of useful contacts within and beyond the School
C6. Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a team with excellent workload and time management skills
C7. Extensive IT and data analysis/interpretation skills as appropriate
C8. Proven analytical and problem-solving skills including a flexible and pragmatic approach
C9. Excellent organisational and co-ordinating skills, including ability to cope under pressure while maintaining a high level of accuracy
C10. Self-motivated, flexible, reliable and with an enthusiastic approach to work

Experience
Essential:
E1. Significant relevant experience of trial or project management acquired across several projects
E2. Experience of working in an academic, health setting or similar environment
E3. Proven ability to deliver quality outputs in a timely and efficient manner
E4. Experience of managing budgets
Desirable:
F1. Experience of applying for ethical approval
F2. Project management experience in the context of mixed methods research
F3. Experience of working on projects across many partners

This post is part-time (17.5 hours per week), and open ended with funding available up until 31st October 2028.
