Hours of work: 24 hours per week – 08.00 – 16.00 with flexibility

About the role

For many service users coming to The Passage, the provision of food is a key part of being able to meet their vital primary needs. It provides stability and can help with starting to address health and wellbeing. For service users with no recourse to public funds, it is often their only reliable source of meals and a key component in supporting them whilst we work with them to resolve their homelessness. Within the Passage Resource Centre and Passage House Assessment Centre we provide two meals per day for all service users; this is a key part of the work that we do in supporting individuals experiencing homelessness.

The PRC Support Chef works alongside the Chef and Primary Services Manager to supervise volunteers and lead on preparation and service of meals for the service users of the Passage Resource Centre. They work with the team to ensure that healthy balanced meals are provided for service users and that these meals are prepared adhering to the highest standards of food hygiene, and health & safety. They work alongside the Primary Services Team to ensure that purchased supplies and food donations are fully utilised to reduce costs.

Key Responsibilities

  • To work with the Primary Services team to plan and prepare daily meals, varying this as much as possible and considering the dietary requirements of clients.
  • Processing and monitoring food donations, and stocking and checking the delivery of ordered goods
  • Ensuring that Health & Safety regulations are always met and adhered to, maintaining high standards in the quality, preparation and presentation of food, with special regard to Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) and good food hygiene.
  • Supervise and carry out food preparation and cooking of fresh hot meals in the Passage Resource Centre
  • Supervise daily cleaning of fittings, equipment and appliances to the highest standard
  • Assist with kitchen volunteer induction and supervision, using the skills the volunteers can offer and seeking to maintain a good working relationship with all volunteers and staff.
  • Assisting the Primary Services Manager with delivering the catering service for Passage Trading Services.
  • Work effectively with multiple internal teams across The Passage including Fundraising, Finance, Facilities and Client Services.
  • Support corporate fundraising events including hosting Kitchen Takeovers in the Resource Centre and Passage House Assessment Centre.
  • Work with the Primary Services Team to review and reduce costs wherever possible
  • Ensure accurate recording of key data related to Primary Services and work with Primary Services Manager and Fundraising services to complete service reports as needed.

General Duties

  • To ensure that all The Passage policies and procedures are being adhered to, particularly those relating to Health and Safety, Code of Practice and Confidentiality.
  • To participate in regular supervision.
  • To provide or arrange cover for other members of the team and division as necessary, including covering Primary Service shifts at Passage House Assessment Centre occasionally as required.
  • To attend team meetings and any other meeting as deemed necessary by the Manager
  • To be proactive in reviewing and evaluating own performance and identifying and acting upon areas for improvement, training, and development.
  • To undertake as required, any other duties compatible with the level and nature of the post and/or reasonably required by more senior members of staff
  • Attend and participate in internal & external divisional and team meetings and other forums as required.
  • To contribute to the effective implementation of The Passage’s EDI Policy as it affects both The Passage and its work with vulnerable adults.
  • In conjunction with the Primary Services Manager, to continuously develop the role to ensure that all tasks are being undertaken in an effective and appropriate manner which meets the strategic aims and objectives of The Passage.
  • To always undertake your role in a professional manner maintaining a high-quality standard of work, and to always work in accordance with the aims, values, and ethos of The Passage.
  • Undertake any other duties that may be required which are commensurate with the role or organisational requirements.

Desired experience

Considerable experience of working in catering ideally within a canteen, hotel or staff restaurant or similar setting.

Experience of working with Food Safe Systems.

Experience of working with volunteers.

Experience of working with and catering to a range of individuals with varying levels of need and experience

Desired knowledge and skills

Basic understanding of the support needs of people experiencing homelessness and multiply disadvantaged people and the ability to translate knowledge into good practice.

Knowledge of Equal Opportunities and Health and Safety, and the implications of both within the working environment.

Recognised qualifications in Food Hygiene and HACCP. (Desirable)
