Refugee Festival Scotland is a 10-day, national celebration of art, culture, community and the positive contribution refugees make to life in Scotland. Our unique festival showcases the music, dance, food, art, language and ideas that people bring with them when they settle in Scotland.

In this divided world, bringing people from different backgrounds together to build friendship and understanding is more important than ever.

The festival is centred around World Refugee Day on 20 June, established by the UN in 2000. This year, we will be marking the 75th anniversary of the UN Refugee Convention, and inviting events to engage with ideas of celebration, collaboration and building a shared future

We’re looking for volunteers to help create a buzz around Refugee Festival Scotland 2026. By capturing positive, colourful and creative photos and video clips documenting events as they happen, you will play an important role in sharing a flavour of the festival on our website and social media channels.

Please note that you will need to use your own photography equipment.

What will I be doing?

  • Taking quality photographs and short video clips at Refugee Festival Scotland events, so we can document the festival as it happens on our website and social media channels
  • Choosing and uploading a selection of your best images/video clips from each event to a designated shared drive within 24 hours (the quicker the better)
  • Clearly labelling or captioning your photographs so we can tell when and where they were taken (and who appears in pictures where relevant)
  • Ensuring people know are aware that their photo is being taken and explaining what images will be used for if asked

What skills or qualities do I need?

  • Strong photography skills
  • Clear and confident communication, both spoken and written
  • An interest in social justice, arts and culture, and/or supporting the charity sector
  • The ability to work well with a wide range of people
  • Confidence working independently and using your own initiative
  • The ability to follow instructions and meet tight deadlines
  • Reliability, punctuality and a positive attitude

What equipment do I need?

  • A camera or a high‑quality smartphone
  • A laptop or another device you can use to upload your photos to the shared drive

What do I get out of it?

  • An opportunity to build and strengthen your photography portfolio
  • Experience of photographing a wide range of lively and engaging festival events
  • Your photographs are likely to be seen by thousands of people who visit our websites and social media channels
  • We will credit your photos
  • Your photography may also be used in our online resources and printed materials
  • The opportunity to meet new people from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences
