Introduction to Aldwickbury School

Aldwickbury is an independent day and flexi-boarding Pre-Prep and Prep School for children aged 4-13, located in 20 acres of grounds on the outskirts of Harpenden in Hertfordshire. From September 2026, Aldwickbury is excited to be opening a Nursery for children aged 3-4 years old, extending the opportunity to be part of this outstanding school. Operated as an Educational Trust, the School is administered by a Board of Governors and is a member of the Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPs).

The Role

Job Title: Peripatetic Violin Teacher

Accountable to: Director of Music

Job Purpose: Aldwickbury School seeks to appoint an outstanding violin teacher to teach individual and class lessons across the Prep School from September 2026. The role requires the violin teacher to provide pupils with a rounded musical education, and the successful applicant will be an experienced and talented teacher who is able to inspire young musicians

The Music Department

The Music Department is flourishing and vibrant, with around 250 one-to-one music lessons delivered each week and approximately 12 different ensembles. The pupils perform regularly in class, in informal concerts and at formal endof-term concerts. There are also a variety of productions throughout the year involving pupils of all ages.

Music is highly valued at Aldwickbury, and the children are inspired by the passion and expertise of the teaching staff. This enthusiasm has led to a steady increase in the number of pupils taking up lessons and becoming involved in cocurricular music. A number of pupils have gone on to achieve music scholarships and awards at their 13+ destination schools.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Aldwickbury is committed to continuous improvement, and all staff are expected to actively participate in school activities and embrace a flexible, forward-thinking approach.

While every effort has been made to outline the key duties of this role, additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed by the Director of Music and updated in line with the evolving needs of the school.

Teach 30-minute individual lessons and three class music lessons within the Junior Department, as directed by the Director of Music

Lead an ensemble group, encouraging participation and musical progression

Actively promote the violin and support the recruitment of new music pupils

Demonstrate a passion and enthusiasm for the violin, fostering a positive, encouraging learning environment

Plan and deliver a tailored programme of study for pupils, ensuring clear progression and continuity in learning

Set appropriate learning goals and encourage regular, purposeful practice between lessons

Maintain accurate attendance records and lesson notes using the school's music administration system

Prepare, motivate and support pupils to perform in concerts, assemblies and other school events

Prepare pupils for music examinations, where appropriate

Support pupils applying for and auditioning for senior school music scholarships

Attend performances, concerts, church services and other school events as required

Person Specification

The successful candidate will be an engaging, enthusiastic, and highly skilled violin teacher who can inspire pupils of all abilities and nurture a lifelong enjoyment of music.

Qualifications and Experience

A recognised music degree or equivalent professional qualification in music education

A recognised teaching qualification and/or significant vocational experience in teaching

Proven experience teaching to primary and/or prep school-aged pupils

Experience preparing pupils for graded music examinations, auditions, and music scholarships

Thorough and up-to-date knowledge of examination requirements

Skills and Personal Qualities

Strong communication and motivational skills, with a child-centred and encouraging approach

Warm, engaging, and approachable, with excellent interpersonal skills when working with pupils, parents, and colleagues

The ability to inspire confidence and a love of playing, tailoring teaching style to suit the needs of individual pupils

A pleasant and professional manner combined with enthusiasm and energy

A genuine commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, in line with school policy

Terms of Appointment

Hours of work: Part-time, up to 1 day per week. Approximately 7 hours, including individual teaching, 3 class lessons and an ensemble group

There is a degree of flexibility within these hours which can be discussed at interview

Contract: Term-time only

Salary: £36.76 per hour (reviewed annually)
