Job Description: Part Time Teacher of Latin

Location:

Kingswood Senior School

Responsible to:

Head of Classics

Job purpose

To teach Latin to Year 8, Year 9 and Sixth Form.

• To contribute to all aspects of life in a busy boarding and day school, including the cocurricular programme.

Latin Department Information

The department is led by the Head of Classics, who teaches Latin from Years 8 to 13, and is supported by colleagues within the Modern Languages Department, including the Head of Modern Languages and Head of German, and a Teacher of German and Assistant Housemistress, who contribute to the teaching of Latin across Years 8 and 9.

All pupils study Latin in Year 8. Although we have small classes at GCSE and A Level they include some of the school’s best scholars, often going to top universities to read Classical subjects. We are seeking a part-time teacher, for 4-6 lessons per fortnight including teaching Year 8, Year 9 and a small number of 6th form lessons.

Year 8 and Year 9 have three Latin lessons per fortnight. After Year 9 pupils may choose to continue with Latin and sit the Eduqas GCSE. Years 10 and 11 have five periods of Latin per fortnight and the Sixth form classes have twelve. We use the Cambridge Latin Course and this is particularly well received by the younger age groups, though a thorough revision of grammar is necessarily the focus of the beginning of the Lower Sixth. We aim to complete Cambridge Latin Course Book 1 in Year 8, Book 2 in Year 9 and to have reached Book 4 stage 32 by the end of Year 10. We prepare set texts in Year 11.

To ensure that our Year 8 beginners gain maximum benefit from their first year of Latin, it is important that the successful candidate can strike a balance between supporting those who may initially find the subject challenging, while also providing a rigorous and inspiring introduction for pupils who may go on to study Latin at A Level.

In addition to our classroom teaching we have an enthusiastic Classical Society. We run annual trips to the Roman Baths for Year 10 and to The British Museum and UCL for the Sixth Form and a biennial trip to Pompeii and The Bay of Naples.
