Part-Time Teacher of English (Fixed Term)
PART-TIME TEACHER OF ENGLISH FIXED TERM
Background to the School
Farnborough Hill is an independent Catholic day school and a member of the Girls’ Schools Association, Independent Schools’ Association and CISC. It welcomes pupils and staff of all faiths and no faith, provided they are in sympathy with the ethos of the School.
Located on the Hampshire/Surrey border, the School has excellent transport links, both by train and road being about a 10 minutes’ walk from Farnborough Main railway station.
Farnborough Hill is committed to the education of the whole person. The School places great emphasis on the all-round personal growth of its pupils. It aims for academic excellence as well as ensuring that pupils play a full part in school life and have the opportunities to develop their co-curricular interests.
The School offers Academic, Art, Drama, Music and Sports Scholarships at 11+ as well as means-tested bursaries for families in need of financial assistance. Sixth Form Scholarships are awarded on the basis of open examination, as well as for excellence in Creative Arts, Music, Performing Arts and Sport.
In 2025 our A level pupils once again achieved impressive results with an excellent 50% of all grades at A*/A and 76% A*-B. Our GCSE results were also excellent with 48% of grades awarded at 9-7.
The School’s aim is to engage wholeheartedly in all activities, challenges and opportunities. This is achieved through our pastoral care and encouragement of each individual. This is a strength of Farnborough Hill and we see it as an essential part of our caring, Christian ethos. Parents greatly appreciate this and see it as an important ingredient when choosing to send their daughters here.
The School is housed in the historic home of the ex-Empress Eugenie of France, to which much purpose-built school accommodation, such as the sports hall, swimming pool, Art and Design Technology Centre, modern laboratories, theatre, a music suite and hockey all-weather pitch have been added, with an inspiring new Sixth Form Centre which opened in September 2022. These facilities sit within approximately 65 acres of parkland making it a tranquil and inspiring place to work, alongside a forward-looking and ambitious Senior Leadership Team and governing body.
FARNBOROUGH HILL
The English Department
The English Department is lively, forward-looking and successful. It currently consists of four full-time members of staff, one of whom is also our Head of Learning Support, and three part-time colleagues. The School Librarian supports library and reading lessons with KS3 and KS4 English classes, and liaises with the Head of English on a variety of library issues.
The English Department teaches in a dedicated group of rooms, which are all equipped with interactive whiteboards. The extensive bookstore is constantly updated, and the well-resourced school library offers a good environment for whole-class research and for individual study. The departmental office offers facilities for administration and departmental planning, as does the staff workroom. There is also a dedicated Drama studio and Theatre, both with lighting and sound facilities that can be used in liaison with the Director of Drama.
English Literature is offered at A level, following the AQA English Literature A specification. Years 10 and 11 are banded in broad ability groups and our integrated course leads to girls taking examinations in English Language and English Literature (also AQA).
In the Lower School pupils are taught in mixed-ability classes until Year 9 when they are banded. The School is not obliged to follow the National Curriculum, but the departmental programme of study covers its areas. There is a strong emphasis on developing written fluency and accuracy, and confidence in speaking and listening. Pupils are introduced to a wide range of texts, both contemporary and from earlier periods, and teachers are encouraged to study Shakespeare with all years. The departmental programme of study envisages the application of a full range of teaching methods.
If desired, English teachers are able to assist with Drama productions under the guidance of the Director of Drama. The English Department is responsible for public speaking and debating and compete in competitions with considerable success; our Intermediate Public Speaking teams have been National Champions in both the Rotary Youth Speaks competition, and the ESU Churchill Public Speaking Competition. It also organises whole-school celebrations for days such as National Poetry Day and World Book Day and promotes other similar events where appropriate, such as a birthday celebration for Shakespeare.
Part-Time Teacher of English (Fixed Term)
This part-time post (approximately 0.5), which has arisen from the internal promotion of one of the existing members of the department, is suitable for an experienced teacher with a proven track record of teaching English, or a returning to the profession. Although focused primarily on KS3, the opportunity to teach at GCSE and/or A level may be available for the right applicant.
