About Huddersfield Mission
Huddersfield Mission is an aspiration-led organisation committed to continuous improvement, inclusivity, and creating a safe, justice-seeking environment for our community. We provide vital support to individuals navigating complex challenges, including homelessness, mental health, and substance misuse.
The Role & Professional Development Opportunity
We are seeking a dedicated and resilient Advice Officer to join our frontline team. This role is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced advisor, or an accomplished volunteer looking to step up, to transition into a paid, core frontline post.
While this is a fixed-term position, we are highly committed to your professional growth. We offer comprehensive training and development opportunities tailored to the successful candidate, making this an excellent role for someone looking to formalise their advice skills, gain recognised experience, and advance their career in the third sector.
Operating within our open-access, first-come, first-served drop-in service, you will provide immediate, advanced advice and crisis intervention. Beyond the drop-in, you will manage vital low-level follow-up work and provide out of drop in hours, customer appointments, provide basic guidance to our valued volunteer team, and collaborate with partners across Kirklees. Enhanced DBS will be required.
Key Responsibilities:
-
Provide immediate support, advanced advice, and crisis intervention to customers during morning drop-in sessions on a first-come, first-served basis.
-
Undertake essential, short-term follow-up work outside of drop-in hours, assisting customers by writing letters, helping with official forms, or explaining complex legislation.
-
Provide basic guidance, mentorship, and support to advice volunteers and placement students working alongside you.
-
Maintain accurate, timely electronic records on the CRM system and compile impactful case studies to demonstrate the service's reach.
-
Represent the Mission in external partnership meetings and project manage specific service aspects, such as our clothing provision.
What We Are Looking For:
-
Proven experience working or volunteering in an advice or frontline support setting, ideally handling complex needs (e.g., housing, benefits, mental health).
-
A strong understanding of the UK welfare system and local referral pathways.
-
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to maintain personal resilience and clear professional boundaries in high-distress situations.
-
Competent IT skills, including experience with electronic record-keeping systems (e.g., Lamplight or similar CRM).
-
A clear alignment with the Mission’s five core aspirations, demonstrating a proactive commitment to fostering a learning, inclusive, safe, justice-seeking, and supportive organisation.
How to Apply
If you have a professional, person-centred approach and want to build your career while making a tangible difference in Kirklees, we would love to hear from you.
