OxNet Postgraduate Tutor

Pembroke College are currently recruiting Postgraduate Tutors from across the University of Oxford to support the OxNet Access programme in 2026.

About OxNet:

The OxNet Access programme works with approx. 100 Year 12 pupils based in state schools across West London, the North West and North East of England. We offer six OxNet programmes/streams: Philosophy & World Religions, Science, Languages, Social Science, English and Humanities.

OxNet aims to:

  • Challenge pupils to think beyond the curriculum, in a critical, flexible and independent manner
  • Raise academic resilience, confidence, and curiosity
  • Develop university study skills
  • Prepare pupils for the realities of undergraduate-level study at a research-intensive institution
  • Showcase the variety of subjects on offer at degree-level and the importance of interdisciplinary learning
  • Encourage smart subject choices
  • Demystify the tutorial method, preconceptions of college life and Oxbridge in general

Role responsibilities: 

We are looking for Postgraduates who can:

  • Design and deliver a 1-hour introductory lecture:Pitched at a first-year undergraduate level, the lecture should be based on a topic within your subject area. The online lecture will take place on a weekday evening between15th June and 10th July, from 6pm-7pm. Please note that the series is open-access across our network so the audience size and composition will vary, however, the attendees will mostly comprise of Year 12 pupils (aged 16-17) who are participating in either the OxNet Access programme, or the Pembroke Scholars Outreach programme. Following the lecture, pupils who are taking part in the OxNet Access programme will be asked to choose a one of the lecture topics they would like to study in more depth as a tutorial during the OxNet Access Week Residential.
  • Create a tutorial reading list: You will need to set a selection of pre-readings for your first tutorial. The pupils will work through these as preparation for their first tutorial. You must submit the reading list and scanned digital copies of all the readings by15th July(this gives the pupils just over two-weeks to review the materials).
  • Deliver an in-person tutorial at Pembroke College on 3rd August 2026: You will lead an in-person tutorial with a group of 2-5 pupils at Pembroke College. At the end of this tutorial, you will set an essay question or Scientific problem sheet (depending on your topic)
  • Review the essays: A member of the OxNet team will send you the essays/problem sheets via email on5th August 2026. Please note that no written feedback or marking is required as you will be providing verbal feedback during the second tutorial.
  • Deliver a second in-person tutorial at Pembroke College on 6th August: You will share feedback about the essays, and encourage a group discussion about the work.

Remuneration: 

You will be paid at the Senior Tutor rate, which is currently £33.50 per contact hour (any preparation time and follow up work will not be paid separately to this rate, as seen across the University of Oxford).

  • Why you would like to be a Postgraduate Tutor?
  • What experience, if any, you have working with young people in a teaching/mentoring/leadership role and whether you have ever taught a tutorial previously (please note that previous experience is not required for this role)
  • Whether you have a validDBS certificate issued in the last 12 months? (Please note that a DBS check is not required for this role, however we will take details of mentors who have existing checks)
  • Whether you can deliver your lecture and tutorials on the dates specified above?
  • Anything else you think we should know in relation to your application?

  • All successful candidates will be required to provide evidence of their right to work in the UK in advance of starting any work.

  • All candidates should have a valid national insurance number
  • Unfortunately, we are unable to provide accommodation for tutors during the residential at Pembroke College
