Overnight Visitor Operations Staff (Casual)

Job Details
Hours: 8:00pm to 9:00am (13-hour overnight shift, including paid rest breaks).
Pay: Between £160-£195 per shift – increasing from April 2026.
Standard casual staff rate plus enhanced pay at 1.5x between midnight and 6:00am. Current standard casual rates are: £10.00 (up to 20yr) and £12.21 (age 21yr+).

Deadline: We’re reviewing applications as they come in and arranging interviews on a rolling basis – apply as soon as possible to avoid missing out.
Shift pattern: This role operates on a casual basis where shift availability fluctuates depending on bookings. Typically we expect up to 20 overnight bookings per year, usually on Thursday, Friday or Saturday nights. As a casual team member, you’ll have the flexibility to choose the shifts that suit your schedule, with no obligation to work every week. A rota of available shifts is usually shared at least one month in advance, giving you plenty of time to let us know your availability.
If of interest, additional work may be available within the Visitor Operations (Customer Service) team during daytime school holidays and weekends, where there may be no sleepover bookings. This is subject to team allocation.

The Charity runs Winchester Science Centre - a vibrant, hands-on experience for young children. The Role
We are looking for enthusiastic and reliable individuals to join our Visitor Operations Casual Team, supporting our hugely popular Sleepover events.
As an Overnight Visitor Operations Staff member, you will help deliver a safe, welcoming and memorable overnight experience for children, families and group leaders. You’ll play a key part in creating a smooth and enjoyable experience for our visitors, using your attentiveness, friendliness and calm approach to support them throughout the event.
You must be able to remain awake, alert and proactive throughout the entire overnight shift.
Key responsibilities
- Provide a warm, friendly and informative welcome to all visitors.
- Be visible and available throughout the night to answer questions and offer support.
- Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all guests, remaining awake and vigilant in your designated area.
- Prepare and serve food including evening hot chocolate and breakfast cereal.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness and presentation across public areas including café, shop, exhibitions and toilets.
- Follow all health & safety, safeguarding and emergency procedures, including evacuation protocols.
- Carry out basic overnight venue checks and report any issues to the Duty Manager.
- Support colleagues and contribute positively to a collaborative, inclusive team culture.
- Undertake additional duties as required to support event delivery.
About You
We’re looking for someone who is:
- Reliable, punctual and committed.
- Able to stay awake and alert throughout a full overnight shift.
- Friendly, confident and comfortable communicating with children, families and group leaders.
- Calm under pressure and able to follow clear instructions.
- Proactive and capable of working independently during quieter periods.
- Confident following safety procedures and responding appropriately to unexpected situations.
- A supportive team player who understands what great teamwork looks like.
- Genuinely enthusiastic about delivering excellent customer service.
- Minimum age 18 due to night working restrictions.
Previous experience in customer service, events, hospitality, education or visitor attractions would be helpful, but enthusiasm and reliability are just as important.
