Your next role could help people facing homelessness develop new skills and gain valuable work experience. By joining Emmaus Hertfordshire, you’ll be part of a team working to end homelessness, one person at a time.

We are seeking a passionate, practical, and proactive Operations & Sustainability Coordinator to support the efficient day-to-day running of our Letchworth store and help strengthen sustainability across our wider social enterprise operations.

Working closely with the Letchworth Store Manager and reporting to the Retail Operations Manager, you will play a key role in managing operations, logistics, and warehousing in our largest store. You’ll also support the movement of stock across our organisation – helping with house clearances, deliveries, collections, recycling, and stock rotation between stores. A strong focus of the role is reducing our environmental impact through improved reuse, repair, and responsible disposal.

About Emmaus Hertfordshire

Our social enterprises are vital – not only do they generate the majority of the income required to run our community, they also provide meaningful work, training, and confidence‑building opportunities for our Companions (people who have experienced homelessness).

We’re looking for someone with a positive, can‑do attitude who can coach and support others with empathy, patience, and encouragement.

About the Role

At Emmaus Hertfordshire, no two days are the same. You might be:

  • Organising and improving warehouse systems
  • Preparing donated goods for resale
  • Driving as part of our house clearance team, identifying and transporting reusable items
  • Delivering and collecting stock between our stores and warehouses
  • Rotating stock across branches to ensure the right items are in the right place
  • Transporting goods for recycling or reuse in the most sustainable way
  • Working in our workshop to restore, repair, or repurpose donated items

What we can guarantee is that your work will be varied, hands‑on, and genuinely rewarding.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of the organisation and efficiency of warehousing and operational processes at the Letchworth store
  • Support logistics, including house clearances, deliveries, collections, stock rotation across stores, and transport for recycling
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve recycling, upcycling, reuse, and waste reduction
  • Champion sustainable practices across our social enterprises
  • Work collaboratively with Companions, staff, and volunteers to embed operational best practice
  • Stay up to date with sustainability trends, policies, and best practice
  • Identify items suitable for repair, restoration, or upcycling within our workshop
  • Ensure a strong focus on repairing and repurposing items that would otherwise be unsaleable
  • Manage the disposal of unusable goods in the most environmentally responsible way
  • Generate creative ideas for making use of slow‑selling or unsaleable stock
  • Support established processes for obtaining, sorting, pricing, and tracking stock
  • Assist with stock management across branches, consulting with shop managers to ensure appropriate stock levels and minimise waste

About You

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Is proactive, adaptable, and comfortable working independently and as part of a team
  • Enjoys a practical, physical role alongside planning and coordination
  • Has strong organisational, project management, and communication skills
  • Can motivate and support people from all backgrounds to work effectively and sustainably
  • Has a genuine passion for environmental sustainability and social impact
  • Has knowledge of waste management, logistics, or sustainable business practices

A full, clean driving licence is essential, as the role involves driving, van use, and manual handling.

Emmaus Hertfordshire is an equal opportunities employer, committed to diversity and inclusion. We welcome and encourage applications from people of all backgrounds

To apply send your CV & Cover Letter to alex.taylor@emmaus.org.uk – do feel free to reach out initially for an informal chat about the role.
