Our overall aim is conservation of the natural landscape, concentrating on chalk grassland including eradicating or controlling invasive species and also managing woodland and chalk streams. We are a roving group and don’t work on the same site each time, but work on Chiltern Society reserves as well as working with a number of Wildlife Trusts and the National Trust with the overall aim to improve and preserve our natural environment. Our usual range is from Dunstable Downs over to Whiteleaf and BrushHill but we have occasionally gone further afield.
The season often dictates what needs doing, for example summer through autumn is often spent cutting and raking the grassland, winter is tackling the invasive scrub, spring preparing for the wildflowers, sowing seeds and planting to encourage butterfly species.
The work isn’t overly strenuous and there’s always a number of different tasks to do, giving you choice depending on personal preference, fitness levels, motivation! There is always time to have a rest and a chat. We meet at varying locations on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month, working from 10am to 1pm.
