Are you an enthusiastic and encouraging conductor who enjoys bringing people together through music?
Winslow Concert Band is looking for a new Musical Director to lead our friendly and thriving community band based in Winslow, Buckinghamshire.
We cover a wide range of music, including Big Band, Swing, show and film tunes, classical, pop and jazz, and have been generally playing music that is band level 3-4. With a current active membership of 46 we have and encourage a wide range of experience and abilities amongst our players (approx. ABRSM grade 3 to diploma level and above). We are very proud of our inclusive, supportive and friendly ethos. As a community band members are not required to audition before they join.
The Role
We are looking for a Musical Director who can combine musical leadership with warmth, patience and enthusiasm. The successful candidate will be someone who can inspire confidence, maintain high musical standards and help all members feel valued and supported.
The role includes:
- Leading weekly rehearsals and performances
- Selecting engaging and suitable repertoire
- Supporting the musical development of the band
- Encouraging players of all experience levels
- Working collaboratively with other members of the committee
- Helping to maintain the positive and friendly atmosphere that defines Winslow Concert Band
We particularly welcome applications from conductors who communicate clearly, rehearse constructively and enjoy working with community musicians in an encouraging and empathetic way.
Rehearsals and Performances
The band rehearses every Thursday evening throughout the year (apart from a short Christmas break), from 7.30pm–9.30pm at Winslow Public Hall.
We perform regularly during the summer season and in the lead-up to Christmas, supporting both local events and our Charity of the Year. Alongside concerts and community performances, we also enjoy occasional special projects and trips.
The Musical Director would be expected to attend as many rehearsals and performances as possible. However, our Acting Musical Director is a playing member of the band and there are two further playing members who have also been taking rehearsals and events in the last year, and they are all happy to step in as required.
The Musical Director is a member of the committee and is expected to attend meetings approximately every 6–8 weeks.
About You
We would expect the successful candidate to have training and/or experience in conducting a large instrumental ensemble, and to have knowledge of playing woodwind and/or brass instruments. Most importantly they will have strong communication and rehearsal skills as well as being fun to work with and inclusive, supportive and kind to all our members.
Remuneration
The role has previously been voluntary, with travel expenses covered. However, remuneration is open to discussion depending on the experience and skills of the successful candidate.
