Job purpose
JOB DESCRIPTION
To provide inspirational music teaching to children and young people across Wandsworth.
Wandsworth Music teaches more than 7,000 pupils each year from beginner to diploma standards. In addition to
teaching in schools and online, our music tutors teach at the Wandsworth Music Academy and coach and direct a variety
ensembles. Through our team of professional staff, we ensure that Wandsworth’s children and young people have
access to an exceptional range of musical opportunities; to learn musical instruments; sing; perform in ensembles and
choirs; and progress to new levels of musical excellence.
Main duties and responsibilities

To teach to a high standard in schools and/ or the Wandsworth Music Academy and/ or online.
To inspire children and young people with a love of learning and making music.
To deliver high quality music lessons to individuals, groups and whole classes from beginner to diploma level;
differentiated to meet the needs of all learners.
To plan and prepare high quality lessons, rehearsals, performances and music examination entry; including the
development of resources and the preparation and arrangement of music as required.
To direct, conduct and rehearse ensembles and sectional rehearsals as required, including online.
To assess, keep accurate records and report on pupils’ musical, personal and social progress to a range of
stakeholders.
To participate in performances, courses, tours, professional development opportunities and meetings as required.
To undertake administrative, organisational and basic instrumental maintenance tasks (e.g. changing strings/
reeds, oiling valves etc.) related to the duties described above.
To ensure good discipline and behaviour with due regard for pupil’s health, safety and well-being.
To undertake any other reasonable duties requested by the Head of Music Service or Line Manager

PERSON SPECIFICATION
Qualifications
1.
Qualifications indicating a high level of musical understanding, awareness and proficiency in your area of
specialism (e.g. music technology, instrumental etc). A music degree and/or performing or teaching diplomas are
desirable but not essential.

Experience of performing, creating or facilitating music at a high-level. Professional performing experience is
desirable.
The ability to model and demonstrate effectively both on your instrument(s) and by use of the voice. The ability to
model high level performing standards on your first study is desirable.
Excellent pedagogical knowledge and skills to teach your first study instrument/ voice. Evidence of successful
teaching practice is desirable.
An excellent understanding of the promotion of good instrumental/ vocal health through good posture and/ or
instrument hold.
Knowledge, skills and willingness to teach instruments of the same musical family as your first study.
Knowledge of how to differentiate teaching to meet the interests, needs, and learning styles of a wide range of
children and young people.
Experience of developing and adapting resources to respond to learners’ interest and needs
Experience of managing learning in groups: how to ‘read the room’ and create learning that offers a level of
challenge and independence appropriate to age, ability, capacity and context.
